Mustangs Push Win Streak to Seven with Friday Sweep

BAKERSFIELD – Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett's (above) two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning broke a 1-1 tie as the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series versus CSU Bakersfield and a Friday doubleheader with a 4-1 victory at Roadrunner Softball Complex. Cal Poly completed the sweep and furthered its current winning streak to seven straight in game No. 2 as a bases-clearing double from sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz highlighted a 6-1 victory.
Cal Poly's seven-game winning streak is its lengthiest since taking seven straight from March 3-17, 2018. Cal Poly (12-21, 8-6) completes its three-game series with CSU Bakersfield (8-24, 3-11) – and seeks a second successive Big West Conference road series sweep in as many weekends – with a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, April 16.
During Friday's opening victory, Cal Poly was retired in order during the top of the first before CSU Bakersfield found the opening run in the bottom half as left fielder Kaia Johnson drew a one-out, nine-pitch walk before stealing second, then third and scoring on a Barrett throwing error.
Kept to three hits by CSU Bakersfield starting righthander Reina Castillo (2-13) through the opening five innings, Cal Poly tied the matchup in the sixth through a Roadrunners error. With Mustang freshman Jade Contapay running for senior designated player Lily Amos and two down, sophomore right fielder Sargent reached on a throwing error from Roadrunners third baseman Shaylene Fuimaono. With both Mustangs in scoring position, sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm singled to plate Contapay to even the scoreline, 1-1.
After allowing CSU Bakersfield's opening hit in the third, Cal Poly starting senior lefthander Krystyna Allman stranded three baserunners between the second and sixth innings without allowing a Roadrunner past first. Allman gave way to freshman righthander Paige Maier with one runner on and no outs in the bottom of the seventh and, following a second single and an intentional walk, CSU Bakersfield loaded the bases. Maier, however, struck out pinch hitter Alexis Ortega and induced a foul out from shortstop Cydney Curran to help force extra innings.
Without a run in the eighth inning, Cal Poly produced the winning runs in the top of the ninth as Barrett's single into left field brought home freshman pinch runner Caroline Allman for a 2-1 lead. Barrett later scored on a wild pitch before senior center fielder Noellah Ramos added a run-scoring hit for the three-run margin.
Maier (2-1) returned in the bottom of the ninth to retire CSU Bakersfield in order and close out Cal Poly's first extra-inning win since a 4-3, eight-inning decision versus Illinois (March 17, 2018).
During Friday's second victory, Cal Poly grabbed the game's only lead in the top of the first inning as Lily Amos singled to plate freshman left fielder Jessica Clements.
After stranding one baserunner in the second, Cal Poly went up 4-0 in the third after Diaz unloaded the bags with her two-out double to left field.
In the circle for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Kate Judy (5-9) stranded the CSU Bakersfield bags loaded to close the first. She left one on to close the second, third and fourth innings before CSU Bakersfield scored its lone run in the bottom half of the fifth as a one-out sacrifice fly by Johnson brought home Curran.
Maier tossed the two and two-thirds innings for Cal Poly, keeping the Roadrunners hitless to close the game.
Cal Poly added its final two runs in the seventh with a CSU Bakersfield error contributing to the first and senior shortstop Maddie Amos doubling to supply the second for the 6-1 advantage.
