Cal Poly Overturns Six-Run Deficit to Split Saturday Doubleheader
4/2/2022 7:21:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Limited to five hits by UC Santa Barbara, the Cal Poly softball program dropped the opening matchup of a three-game series and a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against the Gauchos, 6-1. Cal Poly, however, overturned a six-run deficit in game No. 2, scoring seven unanswered runs and, behind six and two-thirds innings of relief and a 129-pitch victory by freshman Kate Judy (above), the Mustangs prevailed, 7-6.
During Saturday's opening matchup, Cal Poly (7-21, 2-6) stranded runners at the corner bases to close the first inning and UC Santa Barbara starting righthander Lexy Mills (1-4) handed the Gauchos a 1-0 edge in the top of the second with a leadoff home run. Center fielder Tyler Goldstein then doubled the lead with a run-scoring ground out before a Mustang fielding error contributed to UC Santa Barbara's third run.
Facing the 3-0 deficit, Cal Poly was retired in order to close the second. The Gauchos then went up 6-0 in the third after right fielder Ashley Donaldson produced a run-scoring double before catcher Thea Thies and Goldstein followed with infield RBI singles.
With both teams held scoreless in the third and UC Santa Barbara (10-23, 2-6) once more in the top of the fourth, Cal Poly loaded the bases without a hit and one down during the bottom half. Mills, however, forced Mustang senior shortstop Maddie Amos out at home before sophomore third baseman Mia Perez grounded out to preserve UC Santa Barbara's 6-0 lead.
Cal Poly eventually scratched out its lone run of the matchup in the fifth as Amos doubled home freshman left fielder Jessica Clements with two down for the 6-1 deficit.
In three and one-third innings of relief for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Paige Maier allowed just two hits and no runs.
During Saturday's second game, Mills once more supplied the opening run by singling home shortstop Madelyn McNally with one down in the top of the first inning. Gauchos right fielder Ashley Donaldson followed with a run-scoring single before third baseman Korie Thomas added a two-run triple to further UC Santa Barbara's lead to 4-0.
Mills returned in the second to help run UC Santa Barbara's lead to 5-0 after singling home McNally once more with one down. The Gauchos proceeded to load the bases with two down against Cal Poly freshman reliever Kate Judy before Thies delivered a single up the middle to score second baseman Maci Fines and increase the lead to 6-0.
Offensively, Cal Poly was limited to just one hit by UC Santa Barbara starting righthander Camryn Snyder (7-10) through the opening two innings. During the bottom of the third, however, Clements reached on a Gauchos fielding error before senior center fielder Noellah Ramos produced a two-out, run-scoring single to cut Cal Poly's deficit to 6-1.
The Mustangs grabbed one more run back in the bottom half of the fourth with first baseman Hailey Prahm doubling to score fellow sophomore Sydney Frankenberger.
Cal Poly then completed the comeback with a five-run, fifth inning. Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett began the rally with a leadoff homer to left field. The Mustangs eventually loaded the bases with two down before Snyder plunked junior second baseman Xiara Diaz to force home Maddie Amos for a 6-4 deficit.
Prahm followed with a two-run double to square the matchup before sophomore pinch hitter Juju Sargent supplied the eventual game-winning blow: a double down the left field line to score Diaz for the 7-6 margin.
Judy, who earned her second collegiate victory in career 16 appearances, stranded a Gaucho baserunner on third to complete the top of the sixth before retiring UC Santa Barbara in order to close the evening.
