Cal Poly Completes Six-Game Home Stand April 2-3 versus UCSB

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program plays three of its final seven Big West Conference series at home, closing a season-long, six-game home stand when hosting UC Santa Barbara for a Saturday, April 2 doubleheader and Sunday, April 3 single matchup. First pitch both afternoons from Bob Janssen Field is 1 p.m. for Cal Poly (6-20, 1-5), which enters play Saturday tied with UC Santa Barbara (9-22, 1-5) for eighth place in the Big West standings. Both programs, however, trail fourth place Long Beach State (14-16, 4-2) by just three games. After being swept at UC Santa Barbara last season, Cal Poly looks for its first series win against the Gauchos since 2017.

CAL POLY VERSUS UC RIVERSIDE: Swept at UC Santa Barbara last spring, Cal Poly seeks its first series victory against the Gauchos since taking two of three matchups during the 2017 season. Since 2016, UC Santa Barbara has won 12 of 15 games. The first and most frequent opponent in Cal Poly's program history, UC Santa Barbara first faced the Mustangs on April 12, 1975, dropping a 16-9 decision. Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 73-71.
CLEMENTS DEBUT A HIT: Having hit safely in 19 of 26 games – including career best four-hit outings against San Diego State (Feb. 13) and San Jose State (Feb. 25) – freshman left fielder Jessica Clements leads all Big West Conference players with a .402 (33-for-82) batting average. Cal Poly's leader with 10 multi-hit games, Clements also ranks seventh among Big West players with 33 hits, eighth with a .444 on-base percentage and 10th with 17 runs. The Feb. 14 Big West Freshman Player of the Week honoree, Clements is one of four Mustangs to start all 26 games alongside senior shortstop Maddie Amos, senior designated player Lily Amos and junior second baseman Xiara Diaz.
AMOS ROUNDING OFF STANDOUT CAREER: Cal Poly's second leading hitter and ranked sixth among Big West players with a .386 (32-for-83) mark and 18 RBI, senior shortstop Maddie Amos enters the April 2-3 series versus UC Santa Barbara having hit safely in 14 of her last 16 outings. Also Cal Poly's leader for doubles (four), homers (three), extra-base hits (eight) and total bases (47), Amos has struck out just eight times in 89 plate appearances, averaging one every nine at-bats. Owner of eight multi-hit games (including three, three-hit efforts), Amos – the March 7 Big West Field Player of the Week honoree – is a .315 (105-for-333) career hitter who has started 116 of a possible 135 games during her career and all 61 since the start of the 2021 season.
ALLMAN IN THE CIRCLE: Having conceded just 11 earned runs in her last 42.0 innings worked, senior lefthander Krystyna Allman ranks third among Big West pitchers with 15 starts, fourth with eight complete games, fifth with a 2.24 ERA and 81.1 innings pitched and eighth with 49 strikeouts. Earning her four victories in the last nine appearances, Allman struck out a season best nine against Penn (March 5).
SIBLINGS IN THE FOLD: Among the 293 Division I programs for the 2022 season, Cal Poly – alongside Indiana State and IUPUI – is one of just three teams to feature multiple pairs of siblings on the roster. With seniors Maddie and Lily Amos each starting all 26 games, freshman third baseman Caroline Allman – a starter in 10 of 19 appearances – has entered the lineup alongside senior lefthander Krystyna Allman.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Three of Cal Poly's opening 13 games occurred versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the Feb. 15 edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After falling against Stanford (receiving votes) on Feb. 13, the Mustangs sustained setbacks versus No. 5 UCLA (March 3) and No. 23 Arizona State (March 4).
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Earning one first-place vote in the 2022 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish following Monday's release. The Mustangs, who finished seventh in the standings last year, earned 42 votes in Monday's poll to finish seven points behind Hawai'i and UC San Diego and one point ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton was selected first in the poll with 77 points and five of 10 first-place votes.
LOOKING AHEAD (APRIL 2-3): Cal Poly opens a six-game road swing and plays its only scheduled games outside of California this season when visiting Hawai'i for an April 8-9, three-game set. The series opens with a 9 p.m. PT (6 p.m. HT) matchup on Friday, April 8 before concluding with 5 p.m. PT (2 p.m. HT) doubleheader on Sunday, April 9. Visiting Hawai'i for the first time since 2018 after the 2020 season series was cancelled, Cal Poly seeks its road series victory against the Rainbow Wahine since producing a 2014 sweep.
