Frankenberger Walk-Off Helps Cal Poly to Mustang Classic Split
3/12/2022 2:35:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sixth-inning, run-scoring hits from sophomores Hailey Prahm and Kai Barrett helped the Cal Poly softball program close an early deficit versus Pacific, but the hosts stranded the game-tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh and closed Saturday's Mustang Classic opener with a 4-3 loss to the Tigers at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly, however, rebounded in Saturday's second game as sophomore left fielder Sydney Frankenberger's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored freshman pinch runner Jade Contapay to hand the Mustangs a 2-1, walk-off victory.
During Saturday's opener against Pacific (7-14), the Tigers pushed across the opening run in the top of the first inning as center fielder Carly Lucchetti followed a one-out triple from shortstop Rian Dirmeyer with run-scoring single to left field.
Pacific furthered its lead to 3-0 in the second, loading the bases with two down before Dirmeyer delivered a two-run single. The Tigers then went ahead 4-0 in the top of fourth with right fielder Emily Budelli singling down the left field line to plate third baseman Kyla Eck.
Despite being limited to just two hits through the opening five innings by Pacific starting righthander Amiyah Aponte (2-2), Cal Poly stranded six baserunners.
The Mustangs, however, broke onto the scoreboard with a three-run sixth inning. With two down and two Mustangs on base, Prahm halved Pacific's lead with a double down the left field line. With Contapay on to run for Prahm, Barrett followed with a single up the middle to cut Pacific's advantage to 4-3.
Cal Poly senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (3-6) – who struck out three Tigers and scattered seven hits – retired Pacific in order during the top of the seventh. Mustang senior center fielder Noellah Ramos led off the seventh with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Maddie Amos and third after designated player Lily Amos grounded out. Ramos, however, was at left at third after sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz grounded out to end the game.
During Saturday's second matchup versus Nevada (5-17), freshman righthander Kate Judy took over in the circle for Cal Poly with the Nevada bases loaded and no outs in the top of the first. She struck out two to strand the bases loaded then struck out two more Nevada hitters in the second and retired the Wolf Pack side in order during the third to keep the matchup scoreless.
Cal Poly then produced the opening run during the bottom of the third as senior shortstop Maddie Amos followed a one-out single from freshman center fielder Jessica Clements and walk by sophomore left fielder Sydney Frankenberger with a run-scoring double.
Nevada, however, loaded the bases with one down against Judy in the top of the fourth. Allman returned in the circle to take over and struck out catcher Kallahan Hunter before center fielder Chelie Senini scored right fielder Aaliyah Jenkins with a run-scoring single that squared the scoreline, 1-1.
Cal Poly was kept to one hit between the fourth and sixth innings. After Allman stranded a pair of Wolf Pack baserunners in the top of the seventh, Cal Poly received a one-out Barrett double before Clements reached on a Nevada fielding error. Frankenberger then delivered her game-winning hit up the middle of the infield to plate Contapay for the 2-1 decision.
