Cal Poly Hosts Penn Wednesday, Mustang Classic March 12-13

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program opens its 18-game home schedule at Bob Janssen Field when welcoming Penn for a Wednesday, March 9 matchup at 3 p.m. Cal Poly (2-13) then hosts the 14th Mustang Classic (returning after a three-season hiatus), squaring off against Nevada (4-16) and Pacific (6-13) twice as part of the six-game event (complete schedule below.). Entering Wednesday's single game against Penn with back-to-back victories, Cal Poly has compiled a 41-21 overall record in 13 previous Mustang Classic tournaments.

CAL POLY VERSUS PENN, NEVADA AND PACIFIC: Cal Poly's first matchup against Penn in 48 varsity seasons came on March 5 with the Mustangs producing an 8-0, five-inning victory at the Judi Garman Classic (Fullerton, Calif.) … the seventh ever opponent in Cal Poly's history with the first meeting occurring on May 1, 1975, Nevada leads the all-time series versus the Mustangs, 15-8. Cal Poly has won the last two matchups, topping Nevada twice (May 17-18, 2017) to capture the National Invitational Softball Championship Region 1 postseason title (Cal Poly advanced to the NISC Championship Round at Liberty, finishing fourth nationally) … Big West Conference opponents from 1997-2013, Pacific leads the all-time series against Cal Poly, 43-27, dating to the first matchup on Feb. 29, 1980. The Mustangs and Tigers last split a March 12, 2021 doubleheader.
CLEMENTS DEBUT A HIT: Having hit safely in 12 of 15 games – including career best four-hit outings against San Diego State (Feb. 13) and San Jose State (Feb. 25) – freshman left fielder Jessica Clements ranks second among Big West Conference players with a team leading .460 (23-for-50) batting average and third with 23 hits. The Feb. 14 Big West Freshman Player of the Week honoree, Clements – also Cal Poly's leader with 11 runs (26 percent of the program's total) – has started all 15 games and already produced seven multi-hit outings.
AMOS ROUNDING OFF STANDOUT CAREER: Cal Poly's leading run producer with 11 RBI and second leading hitter with a .365 (19-for-52) mark, senior shortstop Maddie Amos takes a .305 (92-for-302) career batting average into Wednesday's matchup against Penn. Also Cal Poly's leader for doubles (three), homers (two), extra-base hits (five), total bases (28) and ranked ninth among Big West players with the 11 RBI, Amos owns seven multi-hit games thus far. The March 7 Big West Field Player of the Week honoree, Amos has started 105 of a possible 124 games during her career – including 50 straight between this year and last.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Three of Cal Poly's opening 13 games occurred versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the Feb. 15 edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After falling against Stanford (receiving votes) on Feb. 13, the Mustangs sustained setbacks versus No. 5 UCLA (March 3) and No. 23 Arizona State (March 4).
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Earning one first-place vote in the 2022 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish following Monday's release. The Mustangs, who finished seventh in the standings last year, earned 42 votes in Monday's poll to finish seven points behind Hawai'i and UC San Diego and one point ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton was selected first in the poll with 77 points and five of 10 first-place votes.
LOOKING AHEAD: Cal Poly opens its 25th Big West Conference season when visiting CSUN for a three-game, March 19-20 set. The series opens with a Saturday, March 19 doubleheader before concluding with a Sunday, March 20 single-game matchup. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. both days for Cal Poly, which took two of three home games from CSUN last year to open Big West play.
