Cal Poly Tops Penn in Wednesday Home Opener, 9-0
3/9/2022 5:57:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm enjoyed a pair of two-run doubles to finish with a career high four RBI and senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (above) allowed just one hit in four innings as the Cal Poly softball program opened its 18-game home schedule at Bob Janssen Field on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0, five-inning victory against Penn.
Cal Poly (3-13) recorded all the runs eventually necessary for victory with a four-run first inning. After Allman (2-5) stranded one Penn baserunner in the top half, freshman left fielder Jessica Clements and senior center fielder Noellah Ramos led off the bottom with successive singles. A sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Maddie Amos advanced both Mustangs into scoring position before a wild pitch from Penn starter Payton Bean (1-4) brought in Clements. Junior shortstop Xiara Diaz followed with a run-scoring single before an error by Penn center fielder Brianna Brown on a Prahm fly ball brought home two more baserunners for the 4-0 advantage.
Allman conceded Penn's one hit in the second and retired the Quakers in order during the third. Cal Poly then ran its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third through Prahm's first two-run double.
Allman closed her tenure by retiring Penn in order in the fourth. During the bottom half, freshman third baseman Caroline Allman produced a one-out sacrifice fly to plate sophomore pinch runner Juju Sargent before Prahm doubled once more to cement Cal Poly's 9-0 advantage.
Mustang freshman reliever Kate Judy stranded the Penn bases loaded in the top of the fifth to help secure the run-rule victory.
Cal Poly continues a five-game home stand when hosting the 2022 Mustang Classic, March 12-13. Cal Poly opens tournament play on Saturday, March 12 versus Pacific (11 a.m.) and Nevada (4 p.m.). The complete schedule is below.
