SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Kate Judy (above) struck out a career high 10 hitters to open a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Nevada, but the Wolf Pack pushed across the decisive run in the top of the ninth inning and held the Cal Poly softball program scoreless during the bottom half as the Mustangs fell, 2-1. Behind a two-hitter from senior lefthander Krystyna Allman in game No. 2, Cal Poly rebounded to hand Pacific an 8-0, run-rule defeat to close its own Mustang Classic tournament.
During Sunday's opener against Nevada (7-17), Judy (0-8) retired the first nine Wolf Pack hitters faced, remaining perfect until center fielder Chelie Senini singled to lead off the fourth. Judy, however, stranded Nevada hitters at the corner bases in the fourth to keep the matchup scoreless.
Held hitless through three innings by Nevada starting righthander Ellie Garcia (4-4), Cal Poly received successive one-out singles from senior shortstop Maddie Amos and sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent during the bottom of the fourth before stranding both runners.
Meanwhile, Judy – who allowed just four Nevada hits – returned in the top of the fifth to strike out the side. After conceding Nevada's second hit in the seventh, Judy closed the regulation innings having faced just three Wolf Pack batters over the minimum.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the eighth, Nevada scored the opening run with pinch hitter Bella Kordonowy singling to plate right fielder Aaliyah Jenkins.
Cal Poly though needed just two pitches to equalize in the bottom of the eighth. With pinch runner Ellie Yamashita starting on second, pinch hitter Claire Early executed the sacrifice bunt attempt before left fielder Jessica Clements produced a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Into the ninth, Nevada scored once more as Senini reached third with a sacrifice bunt before scoring as second baseman Lauren Gutierrez singled up the middle of the infield.
In the bottom of the ninth, however, Cal Poly stranded sophomore center fielder Sydney Frankenberger on third to end the matchup.
During Sunday's Mustang Classic finale against Pacific (7-17), Allman (4-6) retired the Tigers in order in the top of the first and Cal Poly grabbed the game's only lead in the bottom half through run-scoring hits from Maddie Amos and senior designated player Lily Amos.
Cal Poly added three more runs in the second as run-scoring singles from Frankenberger and Sargent – combined with two Pacific errors – helped contribute to a 5-0 Mustangs lead.
The Mustangs then placed the game in run-rule territory with a three-run third, highlighted by another run-scoring single from Frankenberger and an RBI double by Sargent.
Back in the circle for Cal Poly, Allman stranded two Tigers baserunners in the second before allowing Pacific's only hits in the third. She closed the matchup by retiring Pacific in order during the fifth.
Cal Poly resumes action and opens Big West Conference play with a three-game, March 19-20 series at CSUN. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 19.
