NORTHRIDGE – Limited to two hits by CSUN during Saturday afternoon's Big West Conference opener, the Cal Poly softball program dropped the first game of a doubleheader to the Matadors, 8-0 (five innings). Cal Poly also fell in Saturday's second game, 9-1 (five innings).
During Saturday's Big West opener, Cal Poly starting senior lefthander Krystyna Allman (4-7) stranded the CSUN bases loaded to close the first inning. The Matadors, however, scored five unearned runs with two outs during the bottom of the second, an effort highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from first baseman Sami Garcia.
CSUN starting lefthander Kenedee Jamerson (3-9) retired the first seven Mustangs she faced, a streak snapped with a one-out double from sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm (above) in the top of the third. The Mustangs, however, stranded Prahm before leaving senior shortstop Maddie Amos – who collected Cal Poly's other hit – on base to close the top of the fourth.
The Matadors, meanwhile, placed the decision in run-rule territory after third baseman Vinessa Nunez hit a one-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Cal Poly was then retired in order during the top of the fifth to close the matchup.
During Saturday's second game, two Cal Poly errors during the bottom of the first helped lead to CSUN's opening run. The Matadors next tripled their advantage in the second through a solo homer from shortstop Aaliyah Swan and a two-out, run-scoring double by center fielder Jaymi Steward.
CSUN then furthered the lead to 7-0 in the third with Cal Poly's third error of the game contributing to three unearned runs.
Held to one hit through the opening three innings by CSUN starting righthander Alexis Martinez (6-6), Cal Poly scratched out its lone run of the afternoon in the fourth as senior designated player Lily Amos drove home Maddie Amos with a two-out, RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-1.
Cal Poly, however, stranded a baserunner in the top of the fifth and CSUN reached the 9-1, run-rule decision in the bottom half with Steward producing a one-out, two-run single to end the matchup.
Cal Poly (5-17, 0-2) closes its three-game, Big West-opening series at CSUN with a 12 noon matchup on Sunday, March 20.
