Cal Poly Edged by CSUN in Sunday Series Finale, 4-3

NORTHRDIGE – Senior shortstop Maddie Amos (above) hit her team leading third home run of the season Sunday afternoon, but an unearned run from CSUN in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 3-3 deadlock at Matador Diamond as the Cal Poly softball program dropped the Sunday afternoon series finale, 4-3.
After each side stranded a baserunner in the first inning, Cal Poly (5-18, 0-3) took its first lead of the series in the top of the second. With senior designated player Lily Amos drawing a leadoff walk, sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz followed with a double. Sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm then lined another double up the middle of the infield to plate both baserunners for the 2-0 advantage.
After CSUN (13-17, 3-0) grabbed a run back in the bottom of the second, Cal Poly regained a two-run edge in the third with Amos homering to left field.
CSUN though cut the gap to 3-2 in the bottom half of the third with right fielder Kaylee Escuita producing a sacrifice fly to plate center fielder Jaymi Steward.
Mustang senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (4-8) stranded the CSUN bases loaded to close the fourth before the Matadors tied the matchup in the fifth as third baseman Vinessa Nunez doubled with two down to score Escuita.
CSUN then found the winning run in the sixth. After left fielder Mikayla Carman led off with a single, designated player Alexis Lemus reached on a throwing error by Mustang freshman third baseman Malia Mah. The miscue advanced both Matadors into scoring position before a fielder's choice by catcher Kennedi Sorenson brought home Carman for the decisive run.
Cal Poly returns home to Bob Janssen Field to open a six-game stand with a March 26-27 series against UC Riverside. The three-game series starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 26.
