SAN LUIS OBISPO – UC Riverside finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position during the opening game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, but the Cal Poly softball program sustained its 10th one-run defeat of the season after Highlanders center fielder Haylee Kela produced a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to help hand her side a 2-1 victory. Cal Poly, however, recovered to take game No. 2, 8-2, as freshman righthander Kate Judy (above) earned her first collegiate victory and senior shortstop Maddie Amos supplied four RBI.
During Saturday's opening 2-1 setback, Mustang senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (4-9) allowed just one UC Riverside hit through the opening three innings. Highlanders first baseman Max Ortega, however, lined a leadoff hit off the left field wall to start the fourth before reaching third after designated player Gigi Araki grounded out. Ortega then scored Saturday's opening run following a two-out passed ball from Mustang sophomore catcher Kai Barrett.
Cal Poly, however, equalized during the bottom half of the fourth, loading the bases without a hit after freshman left fielder Jessica Clements drew a leadoff walk, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos reached on a fielding error and senior designated player Lily Amos was hit. Sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent then produced a one-out sacrifice fly to plate Clements and tie the matchup, 1-1.
Both sides kept the other scoreless during the fifth and sixth innings. Highlanders left fielder Nadia Witt, however, doubled to start the seventh and, two batters later, Kela singled home the game-winning run.
With UC Riverside starting righthander Chrys Hildebrand (4-6) completing a one-hit, complete-game effort, Cal Poly was retired in order to close the game.
During Saturday's second game, Cal Poly stranded two baserunners to close the first inning before loading the bags with two down in the second. Sophomore left fielder Sydney Frankenberger first delivered a run-scoring single to plate freshman third baseman Malia Mah before Maddie Amos emptied the bases with a triple to right center. Amos then scored herself after a throwing error by UC Riverside right fielder Ally Troche helped hand Cal Poly a 5-0 advantage.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Judy allowed three UC Riverside hits through the opening four innings without allowing a Highlander baserunner past second. She conceded her first earned run at home after 18.0 innings in the fifth after Highlanders second baseman Lauryn Garewal brought home third baseman Moana Pisia with a one-out sacrifice fly that cut Cal Poly's lead to 5-1.
The Highlanders received a leadoff home run from shortstop Marissa Burk to open the sixth, but Judy stranded two UC Riverside baserunners to keep Cal Poly's lead at 5-2.
Cal Poly completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as two UC Riverside errors contributed to two Mustang runs and the eventual 8-2 scoreline.
