Cal Poly Run-Ruled by UCR in Sunday Series Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman center fielder Jessica Clements (above) produced two of the Cal Poly softball program's five hits Sunday afternoon, but UC Riverside set a Division I-era program record for opponent runs as the Mustangs closed a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field with a 16-0, six-inning defeat.
UC Riverside (12-16, 3-3) scored the only runs required for victory during the top of the first inning as shortstop Marissa Burk followed leadoff hits from second baseman Lauryn Garewal and center fielder Haylee Kela with a run-scoring, fielder's choice. Designated player Gigi Araki later doubled the lead with a one-out sacrifice fly that brought home Kela.
Cal Poly enjoyed successive hits to open the bottom of the first, but stranded both baserunners. UC Riverside returned to notch single runs in the top of the second and third innings. The Mustangs retired UC Riverside in order during the fourth before the Highlanders furthered their lead to 6-0 in the fifth as catcher Jantzen Owen supplied her side's third sacrifice fly of the afternoon before right fielder Taylor Burdette added a run-scoring hit.
After its successive singles to lead off the game, Cal Poly produced just three more hits during the final five innings and advanced only one baserunner to second.
UC Riverside completed the scoring in the top of the sixth as two Mustang fielding errors helped contribute to 10 Highlanders runs and the eventual 16-0 final scoreline.
Cal Poly (6-20, 1-5) closes a six-game home stand when hosting UC Santa Barbara for a three-game, April 2-3 series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 2.
