Cal Poly Scores Twice in Seventh of Game No. 2 to Earn Split with Pacific

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior third baseman Maddie Amos hit her first home run of the season Friday afternoon, but the shot to center field marked the Cal Poly softball program's lone run as the Mustangs opened a Friday afternoon doubleheader versus Pacific with a 2-1 loss. Cal Poly, however, prevailed in the second game, 3-2, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to earn a split in Pacific's first visit to Bob Janssen Field since 2013.
During Friday's opener, Pacific (7-8) collected three hits off of Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Bailey Doherty (3-2) through the opening two innings, but Cal Poly closed the second inning with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a leadoff solo homer from Amos.
Doherty returned in the third to keep Pacific hitless before the Tigers grabbed the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth through a Mustang throwing error and a two-out, run-scoring single from right fielder Valeria Torres-Colon.
After conceding Pacific's two runs, Doherty – who finished with five strikeouts, but allowed six hits – closed the game by retiring 10 successive Tigers hitters.
Cal Poly (5-3), however, received just one hit – a leadoff single by Amos to open the fourth – and advanced only one baserunner as far as second during the final four innings.
During Friday's second game, junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (2-1) struck out the Pacific side in the top of the first before the Tigers notched the game's opening run in the second with two Mustang errors contributing to the 1-0 deficit.
Cal Poly was held hitless until senior second baseman Sarah Wulff singled to lead off the bottom of the third. After moving to second through a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Noellah Ramos, Wulff scored as senior designated player Shelby Jeffries lined a single in front of Torres-Colon in right field to tie the matchup, 1-1.
Allman stranded two Pacific baserunners in the fourth before the Tigers edged ahead in the fifth with third baseman Jessica Mabrey dropping a run-scoring single into left field to plate Rian Dirmeyer for the 2-1 advantage.
Cal Poly was retired in order to close the fifth and sixth innings. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin, however, led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center. On to pinch run, sophomore Juju Sargent stole third before scoring through sophomore catcher Xiara Diaz's single through the left side of the infield.
After junior pinch hitter Lily Amos walked, Wulff grounded out to move both Mustang baserunners into scoring position. Back at the leadoff spot, sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger drew a four-pitch walk. On the throw back to Pacific reliever Hanna Krosky (1-2), Diaz (above) found herself in a rundown before scoring the winning run by sliding around the tag of Tigers catcher Megan Wachholtz.
Diaz produced two of Cal Poly's five hits in game No. 2. Allman struck out five Tigers in victory.
Cal Poly continues its 10-game home stand and closes the non-conference portion of its regular season schedule when hosting Stanford for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, March 14.
