Clutch 3s by Willett Boost Cal Poly to Overtime Win vs. Hawai'i
2/5/2021 7:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Abbey Ellis and Sierra Campisano combined for a 49-point display, and Mustang teammate Maddie Willett connected on back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime on Friday night, combining to lift the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a Big West Conference win against Hawai'i, 79-71 at Mott Athletics Center.
During a back-and-forth thriller consisting of a season-most 18 lead changes and nine different ties, Ellis shot 10-for-22 overall and 2-of-6 from deep en route to 27 points. The sophomore guard also had four steals. Campisano, meanwhile, went 11-for-17 altogether on the way to 22 points, and gathered nine rebounds.
The victory kept the Mustangs (now 8-5 overall) in fourth place in the league standings, at 4-3.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-5 / 2-4 BWC) took their largest lead of the evening only two minutes into the initial quarter, 6-2, but Cal Poly rallied back to head to intermission up 33-30 after junior guard Gianna Silvestri beat the first-half buzzer with a 3 from the top of the arc.
With 36 seconds left in regulation, Amy Atwell sank a 3 to put the Wahine ahead 62-60, but Campisano answered on the next possession with a spin move leading into a jumper to tie the game back up, 62-all. Hawai'i missed its last attempt in the fourth, sending matters to OT.
Willett then caught fire to start the extra period, draining a 3 from the left wing on the first possession to make it 65-62. A bit later, after an Ellis drive put Cal Poly ahead 69-67, Willett sank another 3 from almost the same exact spot to push the Mustang lead to 72-67 with 1:58 remaining.
Ellis followed up with another jumper to extend the margin to essentially a three-possession difference, at 74-67, with 1:15 left.
Willett finished with 16 points, sinking 6 of 9 looks overall. A redshirt sophomore out of Gig Harbor, Wash., the 2019 BWC All-Freshman selection also grabbed four boards in the win.
The two squads will meet again Saturday on the same floor, tipping off at 4 p.m. Although fans are not permitted to attend due to regulations, the action will be broadcast for free on BigWest.TV, with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer calling the action via GoPoly.com.
