Hawai'i Edges Cal Poly 66-60 to Earn Split of BWC Series
2/6/2021 7:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Abbey Ellis sank a crucial 3-pointer with under a minute remaining on Saturday night to give Cal Poly the lead, but the Hawai'i women's basketball team answered right back with a go-ahead basket on the next possession, and proceeded to come up with a couple key stops down the stretch to hang on for a 66-60 win at Mott Athletics Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-5 overall; 3-4 Big West Conference) took their largest lead of the evening at 50-41 with 3:11 to play in the third quarter.
Cal Poly (8-6 altogether / 4-4 Big West) battled back midway through the fourth, as an 8-0 run comprised of an Ellis jumper, back-to-back baskets by Maddie Willett and Sierra Campisano, and a driving layup by Ellis tied the game up at 55-all with 5:07 left.
After Ellis' clutch 3 gave the Mustangs one last lead — 60-59 with 58 seconds on the clock — Amy Atwell hit a jumper to reverse the upper hand once more, plus the foul, and added the And-1 free throw to put UH up 62-60.
Cal Poly's ensuing attempt at a potential go-ahead 3-pointer from the right corner rimmed off, forcing the Mustangs to foul late to stop the clock. The Wahine made four free throws during the final eight seconds to ice the outcome.
Ellis finished with a game-high 24 points and a team-leading three steals.
Jadynn Alexander led Hawai'i with 16 points, as all four of her made field goals came from 3-point range, where she missed only twice.
The Mustangs continue conference action visiting Cal State Fullerton next week for back-to-back matchups on Friday and Saturday. Each game tips off at 4 p.m. from Titan Gym, broadcast for free via BigWest.TV.
