Cal Poly Picks Up Road Win in Overtime, 70-65 at CSF
2/12/2021 7:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal Poly scored the first 13 points of the game on Friday evening at Cal State Fullerton, and although the Titans rallied to force overtime at home, the Mustang women's basketball team came through in the clutch, earning a 70-65 Big West win.
A layup from senior forward Sierra Campisano capped the 13-0 run out of the gate for the Mustangs (improving to 9-6 overall; 5-4 in conference play) with 5:16 elapsed from tipoff.
The Titans would hang around within striking distance, however, keeping the gap to a manageable 18-7 by the end of the initial quarter and then netting the final six points of the first half to head to the break down 29-19.
Cal State Fullerton also closed the third quarter strongly, using a 3 by Anniken Frey right before the horn to start the fourth trailing just 41-36. The Titans then tied it up, 46-all, on a 3 by Carolyn Gill with 6:32 remaining in regulation.
A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Abbey Ellis with 39 seconds left put Cal Poly ahead 56-53, but Frey came back with another crucial 3, connecting from deep with just six seconds on the clock to tie matters up once more at 56 apiece. The Mustangs' attempt at a regulation game-winner caromed off, sending the game to OT.
Immediately to start the extra period, redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Vick secured the tip won by Campisano, sprinting ahead of the defense for the lay-in. Two Campisano free throws on the next possession provided Cal Poly with a 60-56 cushion.
CSF moved within 68-65 on a Gill basket at the nine-second mark, but Cal Poly was able to get the inbound into the hands of Ellis — an 88-percent free-throw shooter — and she knocked down both shots to make it a two-possession game prior to one last miss by the Titans as time expired.
Ellis finished with 24 points, six assists, six rebounds and seven steals (only one back of her career high), and Campisano had 18 points, eight boards and four blocks (matching her career best).
Grad forward Kirsty Brown added 11 points, five rebounds and a block.
Game 2 of the series will return to Titan Gym, also set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Feb. 13 matchup will be broadcast for free on BigWest.TV as well as through GoPoly.com with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer calling the action.
