2/3/2021 2:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Coming off back-to-back road wins, the Cal Poly women's basketball team has returned home looking to keep the momentum going, as the Mustangs are set to now host Hawai'i for a pair of Big West Conference matchups on Friday and Saturday. Each game against the Rainbow Wahine is set to tip off at 4 p.m. PT.
Although fans are not permitted to attend at this time, both matchups with UH scheduled for Feb. 5-6 will be broadcast on BigWest.TV from Mott Athletics Center, with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer calling the action. All live video and radio links can be found on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
Cal Poly won twice at UC Riverside last weekend, 56-43 and then following up with a 67-53 victory, improving to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play, good for fourth place (tied) in the league standings. Hawai'i comes in just a half-game back of the Mustangs, via 3-4 altogether; 2-3 in BWC action. The Wahine fell 82-68 at UC Irvine on Jan. 29 before seeing their Jan. 30 matchup visiting the Anteaters canceled.

ELLIS RANKS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: Abbey Ellis now not only ranks 81st around the country in scoring by averaging a league-leading 17.6 points; she is also No. 12 nationally in free-throw percentage (at .915), plus No. 39 across the NCAA in steals per game (2.7) and 17th in the nation for 3-point accuracy (.464).
The sophomore point guard out of Australia netted 39 points in the 73-63 road win over San Diego State on Dec. 21, the most by a Mustang since Jan. 4, 2018. The showing helped her repeat as Big West Player of the Week for Dec. 29, picking up her third career conference accolade. Shortly afterward, on New Year's Day she had a 31-point outing at UC San Diego, fueled to a large extent by knocking down eight 3-pointers. Her eight triples launched Cal Poly to a single-game program record for made 3s, connecting on 17 of 33 looks from behind the arc on the way to a 90-68 win.
A 2020 Big West All-Freshman honoree and media 2021 Preseason All-Conference pick, Ellis has made two game-winning baskets over the last two years (each in 57-56 victories), respectively, over Lamar University and Santa Clara.
CAMPISANO ALSO CLIMBS NCAA LEADERBOARD: Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano — selected as Big West Player of the Week on Dec. 14 (as well as College Sports Madness' BWC MVP for Dec. 21) — also finds herself among the national leaders in a handful of statistical categories. Now averaging a conference-leading 9.8 boards per game, the senior forward from San Diego ranks No. 47 in the country in rebounding.
Alongside her rebounding average, Campisano, a 2020 all-conference first-teamer, currently ranks second throughout the league in scoring via 16.8 points per game, No. 2 in blocks per game (1.3) and 11th in 3-point percentage (.417).
A former transfer from Oregon, she's only 13 points back of joining the Top 30 in school history for career scoring, now with 701 points as a Mustang.
A LOOK AT HAWAI'I: Amy Atwell, 2020's Big West 6th Woman of the Year Award winner, now leads the Rainbow Wahine with 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Jadynn Alexander is also scoring 10.3 points on average for Hawai'i — which ranks 15th in the country in rebounding margin (+10.3 a game), while Daejah Phillips adds 9.1 points & 5.0 boards.
Meanwhile, Kasey Neubert is the Wahine's top rebounder, with 7.3 per game.
UH won the most recent matchup between the two, 75-58 out in Honolulu last year, to take an 11-10 advantage in the all-time rivalry.
VICK, BROWN JOIN TOP-10 CONFERENCE LEADERS LISTS: Mustang redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Vick and Cal Poly senior forward Kirsty Brown also start this week both ranked within the Top 10 across the conference leaderboards.
Vick's assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0 presently ranks tied for third throughout the league as well as 67th-best in the country. She's also No. 12 in the Big West for assists per game, with 3.2. Additionally, Brown ranks seventh throughout the conference in field-goal percentage, via an even .500, along with fifth in offensive rebounding, averaging 2.4 extra possessions per game.
