23-Point Game From Campisano Helps Cal Poly Top UCR on Road
1/30/2021 6:01:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal Poly senior forward Sierra Campisano scored 23 points on Saturday at UC Riverside, leading the Mustang women's basketball team to a 67-53 Big West Conference win at SRC Arena.
Campisano knocked down 11 of 20 shots, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, sending the Mustangs to a weekend sweep of the back-to-back opportunity.
Nine different teammates also scored for Cal Poly (improving to 7-5 overall; 3-3 in BWC play), which shot an efficient 5-for-9 from behind the arc — part of a 54-percent shooting day altogether (29-of-54).
In the backcourt, Abbey Ellis and Malia Holt both distributed a team-high five assists, as Cal Poly led for all but 11 seconds of the afternoon in totality.
Following a 24-17 Mustang lead after the opening quarter, UCR (5-7; 2-4 BWC) narrowed the gap to 35-33 by the break.
Returning to the floor, the Highlanders took the lead two minutes and 19 seconds into the third quarter, at 38-37, via Keilanei Cooper sinking a 3. After that, however, the Mustangs didn't give up a point for the rest of the period, scoring 20 straight.
The game-swaying 20-0 run is the longest uninterrupted spree of the season, eclipsing the 15-0 surge from the victory against Santa Clara back on Dec. 15.
Saturday's win pushed Cal Poly up into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings.
Campisano, who was only one basket back of her season high for made field goals, is now shooting just under 42 percent from 3-point land for the year (at 15-of-36).
