Balanced Attack, Defensive Effort Lift Cal Poly to Road Win at UCR
1/29/2021 5:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With its top defensive performance of the season, the Cal Poly women's basketball team picked up a Big West Conference road win over UC Riverside on Friday, 56-43 at SRC Arena.
In addition to allowing 13 points fewer than the previously-best defensive yield for 2020-21, the Mustangs gave up just 22-percent shooting for the evening, surpassing the previous 33-percent surrendering midway through December (both against Santa Clara).
Senior forwards Sierra Campisano and Kirsty Brown protected the rim for the day, coming up with three and two blocks apiece, respectively, while sophomore guards Abbey Ellis and Maddie Willett each had a co-team-high trio of steals for Cal Poly (now 6-5 overall; 2-3 in BWC play).
In a mostly halfcourt battle which saw Cal Poly shoot exactly 50 percent (22-of-44) altogether, Ellis finished with 13 points, and Campisano added 11.
Ten different players scored for the Mustangs, and seven dished out assists. Cal Poly was also efficient at the foul line, knocking down 7 of 8 free-throw opportunities.
The Highlanders (5-6; 2-3) took a short-lived lead at 17-15 with 2:20 elapsed in the second quarter, but Cal Poly answered by closing the opening half on a 9-2 surge to head to intermission up 31-23.
Cal Poly then led 45-31 after the third quarter. Thanks to netting the first five points in the final period, Riverside did narrow the gap to just nine with 7:39 left, but the Mustangs responded with a pair of free throws by Ellis and then a jumper from sophomore guard Maddie Vick to retain control.
The two schools return to the same floor 24 hours later to meet for the back-to-back matchup, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. Saturday. The rematch has seeding implications for the upcoming Big West Tournament slated for Las Vegas in March, with each squad starting the day tied for fifth place.
Game 2 will also be live-streamed for free on BigWest.TV.
