Cal Poly Visits UC Riverside for Big West Conference Matchups

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Looking to bounce back in Big West Conference play, Cal Poly heads out on the road this week, as the Mustang women's basketball team is set to visit UC Riverside on Friday and Saturday. Each matchup with the Highlanders tips off at 3 p.m. Fans are not permitted to attend due to regulations, but both of the games booked for Jan. 29-30 will be broadcast on BigWest.TV live from SRC Arena.
Live video and radio links throughout the season can be found on the GoPoly.com schedule page. The Mustangs come in 5-5 overall; 1-3 in conference play and looking to return to the win column after starting out 5-2, while UCR enters the weekend also 5-5 overall; 2-2 so far in Big West action.
Riverside is coming off a 64-45 win over CSU Bakersfield a weekend ago, while Cal Poly almost completed a thrilling comeback against UC Irvine, pushing the Anteaters to overtime before falling 79-70 in a 45-minute battle where the Mustangs rallied back from a 14-point third-quarter deficit.
Cal Poly started Big West play on New Year's Day by breaking the single-game program record for made 3-pointers, connecting on 17 of 33 looks from behind the arc on the way to a 90-68 win at UC San Diego.
ELLIS REMAINS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: Abbey Ellis now ranks 36th in the country in scoring (averaging a league-leading 19.5 points), and is also No. 11 nationally in free-throw percentage (.927), plus No. 33 across the NCAA in steals per game (2.7) and 22nd in the nation for 3-point accuracy (.460).
The sophomore point guard out of Australia netted 39 points in the 73-63 road win over San Diego State on Dec. 21, the most by a Mustang since Jan. 4, 2018. The showing helped her repeat as Big West Player of the Week for Dec. 29, picking up her third career conference accolade. A 2020 Big West All-Freshman honoree and media 2021 Preseason All-Conference pick, Ellis has made two game-winning baskets over the last two years (each in 57-56 victories), respectively, over Lamar University and Santa Clara.
CAMPISANO ALSO CLIMBING NATIONAL LEADERBOARD: Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano — selected as Big West Player of the Week on Dec. 14 (as well as College Sports Madness' BWC MVP for Dec. 21) — also finds herself among the national leaders in a handful of statistical categories. Now averaging 10.5 boards per game, the senior forward from San Diego ranks No. 29 in the country in rebounding.
Alongside her rebounding average, Campisano, a 2020 all-conference first-teamer, currently ranks second throughout the league in scoring via 16.8 points per game, No. 2 in blocks per game (1.3) and 11th in 3-point percentage (.406).
A LOOK AT UC RIVERSIDE: The Highlanders come into this set of back-to-backs ranked No. 35 in the country in fewest points allowed on average, giving up just 57.7 points per game. They also defend the 3-point shot to the eighth-best percentage nationally, yielding just a 23.6-percent rate from deep.
UCR's Jada Holland tops the conference in assists, distributing 5.5 per game, while Keilanei Cooper leads Riverside in scoring, averaging 16.3 points (third-highest mark around the league). Cooper was selected as the Big West Player of the Week on Jan. 18.
UC Riverside leads the all-time rivalry between the two programs 38-37, with Cal Poly winning the most recent matchup, 62-52 in the Inland Empire last February.
VICK, BROWN, WILLETT JOIN TOP-15 CONFERENCE LEADERS LISTS: Following last week, Mustang redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Vick entered the Top 10 in the Big West for both assists per game (with 3.4, good for ninth-best) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1, ranked second throughout the league).
Additionally, Cal Poly senior forward Kirsty Brown is now 11th throughout the conference in field-goal percentage (.469) along with fourth in offensive rebounding (averaging 2.6), while redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Willett is No. 15 in steals per game (1.3).
