SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Looking to build upon the momentum of a three-game home winning streak, the Cal Poly women's basketball team will finish non-conference play on the road, driving south for a pair of matchups. The Mustangs (3-1) will first visit California Baptist (7-0) on Saturday afternoon, tipping off at 2 p.m. at CBU Events Center in Riverside, before traveling to San Diego State (2-4) to take on the Aztecs at 2 p.m. Monday in Viejas Arena.
Fans are not permitted to attend at this time; however, in addition to being video-streamed through the WAC Digital Network and then Mountain West TV, each of the games will be broadcast on the Mustang Sports Network with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer. All video and radio links to follow the action throughout the season can be found on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
CAMPISANO HONORED WITH AWARDS: Following her 31-point, 15-rebound performance in a 70-60 win over New Mexico State, Cal Poly senior forward Sierra Campisano was voted Big West Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 14, in addition to also garnering the Mechanics Bank Mustang Student-Athlete of the Week honor, plus the College Sports Madness BWC Weekly MVP nod.
Campisano currently ranks fourth around the Big West with 19.8 points per game, as well as first in blocks (averaging 1.5) and fifth in rebounding (8.8). She's shooting 3-pointers at a .467 (via 7-of-15) rate.
ELLIS JOINS CAMPISANO ON PRESEASON ALL-BWC TEAMS: Sophomore point guard Abbey Ellis, also selected to the conference's Preseason All-Big West lists, comes into this weekend 10th in the league in scoring, averaging 15.3 points.
Ellis, No. 44 in the country in free-throw percentage (.933) and 37th nationally in steals average (3.3), sank the game-winning basket for the Mustangs in the 57-56 victory against Santa Clara on Dec. 14, as she looks to add to her 2020 BWC All-Freshman collegiate debut.
A LOOK AT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST: The Lancers remained unbeaten with a 75-67 win at Pepperdine on Tuesday, led by 14 points, nine assists and five steals from Preseason WAC Player of the Year Ane Olaeta. Olaeta leads the WAC by distributing 8.0 assists per game & ranks second via 3.3 steals.
The two programs have only met twice previously, both Mustang wins in San Luis Obispo: 67-53 in January 1996 and 84-48 in November 1998, prior to California Baptist transitioning to Division I. CBU's Britney Thomas and Caitlyn Harper are the WAC's top two rebounders, averaging 9.5 and 7.9 boards apiece.
MATCHING UP WITH THE AZTECS: Sophia Ramos leads SDSU with 16.8 points per game, along with averaging 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Téa Adams, scoring 13.7 points a game, is shooting .692 from behind the 3-point arc (9-of-13) this season. Meanwhile, Mercedes Staples is the Mountain West's second-leading rebounder, corralling 8.8 boards per game.
SDSU leads the all-time series between the two schools 10-2, with the last encounter taking place in December 2012, a 73-56 Aztec road win. Of the Aztecs' losses, two have come by fewer than five points, while another came in double overtime at Colorado State, 84-77 on Dec. 10.
4 MUSTANG STARTERS BACK AMONG 12 RETURNING LETTERWINNERS, JOINED BY 7 NEWCOMERS: Last season, Cal Poly opened the conference tournament with back-to-back wins, advancing to the Big West Semifinals at the Honda Center prior to the cancellation of the remainder of play. During the pair of victories, the Mustangs saw Ellis average 25 points, while Campisano, a 2020 all-conference first-team honoree, added 22 per game en route to Cal Poly's second trip to Anaheim in the previous three years.
The Mustangs were voted fourth and fifth, respectively, in the league office's 2020-21 Big West Preseason Coach and Media Polls. Cal Poly received three first-place votes out of 20 in the media poll (along with 126 voting points) and two first-place ballots out of 11 in the coaches poll (totaling 83 points).
Ellis ranked 13th around the country in scoring among all freshmen nationally (averaging 15.6 points), while Campisano moved to No. 7 in school history for single-season scoring (17.2). Also back for the Mustangs after starting at last year's tournament are senior guards Chantel Govan and Malia Holt. The duo combined for 1.9 steals, 4.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game out of the backcourt in 2019-20, as Cal Poly won four of its last five games. Additionally, also among Cal Poly's top scorers through the initial four games are senior forward Kirsty Brown and redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Willett, each of whom head into this weekend averaging 5.5 points.
Brown went 6-of-10 to match her career high of 12 points in the latter victory over Santa Clara, while Willett is also averaging 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 steal in her return to the court following 2019 Big West All-Freshman accolades.
