RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Sophomore point guard Abbey Ellis scored a season-high 22 points on Saturday afternoon to lead the Cal Poly women's basketball team, but the Mustangs saw their three-game winning streak snapped at California Baptist, falling to the Lancers 61-51 in CBU Events Center.
Ellis sank all eight of her free throws and came up with three steals, but California Baptist used a 26-11 third quarter to surge in front after a 20-20 halftime tie, moving to 8-0 for the year.
Senior forward Sierra Campisano added 10 points for the Mustangs (3-2) while establishing a new career high with 18 rebounds. The Big West Player of the Week also had two blocks.
Maddie Willett gave Cal Poly its first lead of the game with a layup to make it 14-13 with 2:29 elapsed in the second quarter, before Hannah Peterson added another bucket off a turnover to cap a 10-0 run by the Mustangs. CBU recovered to tie the score by the break, however, and then swung the game with 10 straight points to open the third quarter, moving ahead 30-20 thanks to a Sydney Palma 3.
Mustang sophomore guard Lily Svetich cut the margin to 30-26 with a baseline jumper midway through the period, but Dorcas Wu answered with a 3 to ignite an 8-0 CBU run toward a 46-31 lead to close the quarter.
Wu finished with a team-high 10 points for CBU.
Cal Poly's road trip continues south to close out non-conference play, visiting San Diego State to take on the Aztecs at 2 p.m. Monday in Viejas Arena.
