Cal Poly Wins Third Straight, 70-59 Over Santa Clara
12/15/2020 6:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With four Mustangs leading a balanced scoring attack, the Cal Poly women's basketball team picked up its third consecutive win on Tuesday, topping Santa Clara 70-59 at Mott Athletics Center.
Sierra Campisano netted 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Abbey Ellis added 17 on a 7-for-15 overall afternoon. Meanwhile, Kirsty Brown and Hannah Scanlan both had season highs on the offensive end, chipping in 12 and 10 points each.
More noteworthy, however, was Ellis' effort on the defensive side of the floor, where she came up with eight steals. Just three back of the school's single-game record (and four back of the all-time Big West Conference mark), her eight takeaways rank tied as the sixth-highest total in a game around the country this season.
The defensive presence by the sophomore out of Australia helped the Mustangs (3-1) generate a 25-7 margin in points-off-of-turnovers for the evening.
After sprinting out to a 17-5 first-quarter lead on the way to a 38-23 halftime upper hand, the Mustangs established their largest lead of the game via 19 points — at 49-30 — on a drive by senior guard Malia Holt with 4:15 to play in the third quarter.
The Broncos (1-2) rallied soon afterward, pulling to within only 58-52 with 5:15 left in regulation. Scanlan, though, in her debut season with Cal Poly after transferring in from Bryant University, scored six straight points to double the lead back to a 12-point gap with 2:55 remaining, and the Mustangs held on from there.
Cal Poly will now head out on the road, wrapping up non-conference play with a pair of games in Southern California.
The Mustangs are scheduled to visit California Baptist in Riverside at 2 p.m. Saturday, before traveling to San Diego State at 2 p.m. Dec. 21. Each of the matchups will be broadcast on the Mustang Sports Network with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer, with links found on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
The Lancers started Tuesday unblemished at 6-0, while the Aztecs began the day 2-4 overall, with the four losses coming by an average of only 5.5 points.
