
Cal Poly Suffers First Home Loss this Season, 83-57

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball, program tying, streak of nine-straight wins to open the season came to an abrupt stop Thursday night as the Cal State Matadors pulled away for an 83-57 win.
With the loss the Mustangs remain in first place in the Big West Conference with an 8-2 record and fall to 14-9 overall while CSUN pulls within a half game with a conference record of 8-3 and an overall record of 12-13. Cal Poly returns to the court on Saturday at 4 pm when the team will host Long Beach State in a Big West Conference game. Saturday will be the "Play 4 Kay" pink game with all fans wearing pink gaining free admittance.
Junior Ariana Elegado was the lone Mustang to score in double figures with 13 points. Four Mustangs managed nine points with freshman Hannah Gilbert's all coming in the second half. Junior Taryn Garza, senior Molly Schlemer and junior Kristen Ale were the others.
Schlemer led the team with 11 rebounds while Garza and Gilbert corralled nine and seven respectively.
Cal Poly shot 32 percent for the game and hit two of nine from beyond the arc. CSUN shot 48 percent from the floor and converted 11 of 25 from long range. Cal Poly outrebounded CSUN, 47-40, but turned the ball over five more times, 18-13. The Mustangs went to the line 30 times making 15 while CSUN made eight of nine from the line.
CSUN dominated in the paint with 30 points and added 20 points off of Cal Poly turnovers.
CSUN was led by Cinnamon Lister with 25 points. Ashlee Guay added 20 points with Janae Sharpe and Camille Mahlknecht scoring 16 and 10 points respectively.
Five minutes after the opening tip, Cal Poly trailed by 11 points, 17-6. With 13:27 on the clock CSUN made it an 18 point game on a 7-0 run (24-6). Midway through the period CSUN continued with the hot hand shooting 65 percent.
The Mustangs went on an 8-2 run to close the lead to 10 (31-21) with 8:47 left in the half, but CSUN responded with an 8-0 run to rebuild its 18 point lead and closed the half on a 15-4 run over the final four minutes and held a 54-29 lead at the break.
CSUN came out hot to open the second half and quickly held a 30 point lead just a minute into play. Cal Poly would whittle away at the lead and pulled within 14 points at the mid-point of the period. But CSUN would build the lead back to 20 with 5:41 left in the game and pulled away for an 83-57 win.
