
Mustangs Fall to Hot Shooting Long Beach St., 85-72

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team shot 51 percent from the floor and made 44 percent from beyond the arc in defeating Cal Poly, 85-72, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,253 fans in the annual Play4Kay cancer awareness game.
With the loss, Cal Poly falls to 8-3 in Big West Conference games and 14-10 overall while LBSU improves to 6-5 in conference play and 14-11 overall. Cal Poly will return to the court on Feb. 20 when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a Big West Conference game.
Cal Poly was paced by junior Ariana Elegado with 22 points while senior Molly Schlemer added 19 points and a team-high 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Senior Jonae Ervin came off the bench to score 17 points and dish out nine assists.
LBSU had four players score in double figures led by Ella Clark with 23 points. Hallie Meneses added 19 points while Lauren Spargo and Jade Wilson scored 14 and 12 points respectively.
LBSU made 28 of 55 field goals and seven of 16 from long range. They went to the line 29 times and made 22.
The Mustangs shot 39 percent from the floor, 29 percent from beyond the arc and made six of nine from the line. Cal Poly outrebounded LBSU, 40-38, and committed one less turnover, 14-13.
Cal Poly trailed by as many 20 with 5:38 left in the game when Cal Poly was able to cut the lead to 10 points, 72-62, on an Elegado three with1:28 on the clock but the Mustangs would get no closer as LBSU made nine of their last 10 free throws.
Cal Poly held a three point advantage, 20-17, midway through the first half (9:59), but trailed 39-26 at the break.
