
Five Score in Double Figures as Mustangs Defeat Pacific 84-74

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – For the second game in a row, five Cal Poly players scored in double figures in leading the Mustangs to an 85-74 win over Pacific in a Big West women's basketball game at Mott Gym on Thursday. With the win Cal Poly improves to 2-0 in conference play and 6-7 overall while Pacific falls to 1-2 and 4-12.
Caroline Reeves, Jonae Ervin and Rachel Clancy all scored 19 points as Kayla Griffin and Tamara Wells scored 15 and 10 points respectively. For Reeves and Ervin the 19 points represented new career-highs.
Reeves points came when she hit nine of 21 shots from the floor while Ervin was eight of 12. Clancy was seven of 15 from the floor and hit three of six from beyond the arc.
Griffin was five of nine from the floor and recorded her second straight double-double when she gathered in a career-high 12 rebounds.
Wells was four of eight from the floor and set a new career-high with six steals and tied a career-high with seven assists.
Pacific was led by Jordan Rogers with 17 points as she hit five of seven 3-pointers. Erica McKenzie added 14 points with Danielle Peacon chipping in with 10.
The Mustangs shot 52 percent from the floor and made three of seven from long range while Pacific shot 49 percent from the floor and made 50 percent from long range.
Cal Poly made 13 of 15 from the line and committed a season-low12 turnovers while Pacific turned the ball over 20 times with the Mustangs credited with 12 steals.
Cal Poly outrebounded the Tigers 36-28.
Pacific jumped to a 17-6 lead four minutes into the game before Cal Poly started to whittle away at the lead. The Mustangs took their first lead of the game at 8:50 when Clancy hit a jumper for a 24-23 Mustang lead.
The teams battle back and forth with five lead changes in the half while the Mustangs held a 40-38 advantage at the break.
Cal Poly opened second half with eight straight points and took a 10 point lead (48-38) on a layup by Reeves with 15:28 on the clock.
The Mustangs made it 15 points (62-47) when Wells converted a layup with 9:05 left in the game.
Pacific would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Mustangs put away the Tigers by 10 points.
The Mustangs were limited to just eight players to start the game due to injuries and player suspensions due to infraction of team rules.
Cal Poly returns to the court on Saturday when the Mustangs host UC Davis for a Big West Conference game at 4 pm in Mott Gym.
