
Clancy's Career-High Leads Mustangs to Third Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Rachel Clancy scored a career-high 31 points in leading the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 74-65 Big West Conference win over UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Mott Gym. With the win Cal Poly improves to 3-0 in conference play and 7-7 overall while UC Davis falls to 12-4 and 2-2.
Clancy's career-high came when she hit 10 of 19 shots from the floor and seven of 13 from long range. She made all four of her shots from the line.
True freshman Molly Schlemer came off the bench to score 12 points in 17 minutes of play. She made all five of her shots from the floor and two of five from the line while adding five rebounds.
Caroline Reeves was the third Mustang in double figures with 10 points hitting five of eight from the floor.
Vicky Deely led UCD with 17 points with Paige Mintun adding 12 in the loss.
Kayla Griffin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while adding six points and six assists. Redshirt freshman Jonae Ervin scored eight points while dishing out a season-high eight assists.
Cal Poly shot a season-high 54.9 percent and made 10 of 24 from long range (42 percent). UC Davis shot 39 percent from the floor, but made only seven of 30 from beyond the arc.
UC Davis outrebounded the Mustangs 35-32 while Cal Poly committed a season-low nine turnovers, one less then the Aggies.
The game opened with the Mustangs down two points before the opening tip when the Cal Poly was assessed a bench technical when the shot clock light did not work. Cal Poly managed to tie the game at 5-5 on a three by Clancy.
UCD midway in the half went on a 6-0 run to open up an eight point lead (22-14) with 9:25 left in the half. After a 30 second timeout Cal Poly went on a run of its own and tied the game for the fourth time of the half (28-28) at the 3:59 mark. UCD went into the break with a 35-32 advantage.
In the second half Cal Poly used a 14-0 run capped by Shlemer layup at 12:27 to take its first lead of the game.
The Mustangs made the lead 10 (54-44) when Clancy hit a three at 10:36, but UCD would respond and cut into the Mustang lead (60-57) when Heidi Heintz made a layup with 5:15 left in the game. Ervin responded with her lone three of the game and the Aggies would not get any closer in the final five minutes.
Eight players suited up for the Mustangs with six getting playing time as three Mustangs played the full 40 minutes of the game.
Cal Poly will continue with conference play when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a game on Jan. 13th at 7 pm.
