FULLERTON – Sophomore second baseman Sienna Erskine provided the Cal Poly softball program an early lead during Saturday afternoon’s Big West-opening doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton, but Titans catcher Isabella Lopez broke a fifth-inning deadlock with a grand slam as the hosts eventually prevailed, 10-2 (six innings). The Titans also won game No. 2 in five innings, 9-1.
During Saturday’s Big West-opening matchup, Cal State Fullerton (13-9, 2-0) kickstarted the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with Lopez singling up the middle to plate shortstop Sarah Perez. Cal Poly, however, surged in front at the first opportunity as Erskine lined a two-out double down the right field line to bring around center fielder Aly Barrios and freshman pinch runner Karina Choi.
Handed the lead, Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Kaylee Davis (2-7) allowed just one Titans hit between the second and third innings before Cal State Fullerton right fielder Nataly Lozano homered to lead off the fourth and tie the matchup.
The Mustangs (6-15, 0-2) stranded two baserunners in the top of the fifth before Cal State Fullerton went back in front during the bottom half, loading the bases without an out before Lopez hit her grand slam to center field. First baseman Ava Arce followed later in the inning with a three-run homer before the Titans secured the run-rule decision with a final run in the bottom of the sixth.
During Saturday’s second matchup, Cal State Fullerton scored all of the runs required for victory during the bottom of the first with third baseman Sarah Coccillos and Lozano stringing together successive two-run singles. Cal State Fullerton then went up 5-0 in the second with Lopez singling home Perez.
Held to one baserunner during the opening three innings, Cal Poly scored its lone run in the fourth after senior left fielder Kiara Blanchard led off with a double before eventually scoring on a one-out single to left center by freshman designated player Myleigh Cooper.
Cal State Fullerton, however, scored four more times in the bottom of the fourth to place the matchup in run-rule territory.
Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton complete the three-game series on Sunday, March 8 at 12 noon.
