SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program opens its 27-game Big West schedule and 29th year of Big West competition when visiting Cal State Fullerton for a three-game, March 7-8 series. Action at Anderson Family Field gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 7 before closing with a 12 noon single matchup on Sunday, March 8. Opening Big West play against a program other than CSUN for the first time since 2019, Cal Poly (6-13) seeks its first series victory against the Titans since 2018. Last year’s Big West regular season champion, Cal State Fullerton (11-9) takes a five-game winning streak into its conference opener.
CAL POLY VERSUS CAL STATE FULLERTON: Swept by Cal State Fullerton in every series since 2019 (excluding the cancelled 2020 Big West schedule), Cal Poly looks to snap an 18-game slide against the Titans. Cal Poly’s last victory against Cal State Fullerton was a 3-0 home win on May 6, 2018. Cal Poly trails in the all-time series, 62-31, since the first meeting between the two programs on March 4, 1980.
FRESHMAN LEAD THE BATTING RACE: Three of Cal Poly’s top four hitters entering Big West play are freshman as first baseman Myleigh Cooper tops the lineup with a .370 (20-for-54) mark while third baseman Leilani Allen is third at .326 (14-for-43) and shortstop Madi Bohannon right behind at .324 (12-for-37). Cooper, who has batted third in the lineup through all 19 matchups, also leads Cal Poly with six multi-hit outings.
BRENNAN IN THE CIRCLE: Securing just one victory in 19 appearances last season, sophomore righthander Bree Brennan enters Big West play having earned three of Cal Poly’s six victories to rank eighth among conference pitchers. Brennan also sits fifth in the Big West with a .268 opposing batting average and seventh with 24 strikeouts – after registering a career high seven versus Kansas City (Feb. 27) – while also leading Cal Poly with 11 appearances.
CONDON ON THE VERGE OF MORE HISTORY: The first and only female head coach in Big West history to coach 1,000 games at a member program in any sport, 22nd-year Cal Poly head coach Jenny Condon requires just eight more victories to become the sixth coach in conference history to reach 500 career wins. The winningest female head coach in university history, Condon ranks sixth in Big West history with both 492 total victories and 210 conference wins. A four-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree, Condon has accounted for 41 percent of the program’s 1,202 all-time victories.
LOOKING AHEAD (MARCH 14-15): Cal Poly plays the first of four conference home series when welcoming defending Big West Championship winner UC Santa Barbara for a March 14-15 series. The Gauchos, who reached last year’s NCAA Tournament UCLA Regional final, open their Big West schedule by hosting UC San Diego March 7-8.
