FULLERTON – Freshman righthander Kaylee Davis tossed a complete-game, three-hitter and the Cal Poly softball program outhit Cal State Fullerton in Sunday’s series finale, 6-3, but the Mustangs stranded nine baserunners against the Titans and fell at Anderson Family Field, 2-0.
After Cal Poly stranded one in the top of Sunday’s first inning, Cal State Fullerton produced the eventual winning runs during the bottom half through right fielder Nataly Lozano’s two-out, two-run homer to center field.
Cal Poly enjoyed hits during the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, but failed to advance a baserunner past second until the sixth, when first baseman Mylina Garza led off with a single and moved to second through second baseman Sienna Erskine’s sacrifice bunt before center fielder Aly Barrios followed with a single. A groundout from shortstop Madi Bohannon advanced both Mustangs into scoring position, but Titans lefthanded reliever Leanna Garcia forced a pop out from pinch hitter Makayla Arlotto to end the threat.
The Mustangs were then retired in order during the seventh to end the matchup. Catcher Maya Venegas and Erskine co-led Cal Poly with two hits apiece.
Cal Poly resumes action when hosting UC Santa Barbara for a three-game, March 14-15 series. Action begins with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 14.
