Mustangs Edged by San Diego, 3-2, to Close NorCal Kickoff

SACRAMENTO – Catcher Maya Venegas and second baseman Sienna Erskine (above) both produced RBI for the Cal Poly softball program Sunday afternoon, but San Diego scored three times without reply as the Mustangs closed NorCal Kickoff play at co-host Sacramento State with a 3-2 loss.
Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Venegas followed a one-out single by Erskine with a two-out, run-scoring base hit up the middle. Cal Poly doubled its lead in the third as Erskine brought home senior left fielder Kiara Blanchard with a sacrifice fly.
In the circle for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Myleigh Cooper (0-1) limited San Diego to just one hit through the opening three innings. San Diego shortstop Hailey Mulligan, however, singled to lead off the bottom half of the fourth before catcher Shawnese Hogue-Lacy cut Cal Poly’s lead in half with a triple to right center. First baseman Taylor Johnson then tied the matchup with a sacrifice fly that plated Hogue-Lacy.
San Diego then drew back-to-back walks before Cooper hit designated player Analesse Garcia to load the bases. With freshman Kaylee Davis on to relieve Cooper, San Diego center fielder Kaylee Oh next grounded to Mustang shortstop Madi Bohannon, who was struck by San Diego left fielder Emily Taylor attempting to reach third. Without a call made, Delgado scored to hand San Diego the 3-2 lead.
The Mustangs were then held to one hit the remainder of the afternoon and without a baserunner past second.
Cal Poly continues action at Stanford’s Feb. 13-15 DeMarini Invitational. Play begins Friday, Feb. 13 against No. 18 Stanford at 6 p.m.
