Cal Poly Opens Mustang Classic with Thursday Setback to Sacramento State

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman designated player Myleigh Cooper produced her first collegiate RBI and sophomore catcher Maya Venegas threw out three Sacramento State baserunners Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly softball program opened its annual Mustang Classic at Bob Janssen Field with a 6-1 loss to Sacramento State.
With Thursday’s matchup shorted to one game from a previously scheduled doubleheader due to precipitation, Sacramento State (9-2) took Thursday’s lead at the first opportunity as two Mustang errors in the top of the first contributed to the game’s opening run.
The Hornets then went up 3-0 in the third with designated player Katie Marsh and third baseman Madison Evers-Lyles contributing back-to-back run-scoring hits.
Cal Poly was held hitless by Sacramento State starting righthander Alexa Ortiz (3-1) until the third when sophomore right fielder Maddy Bermudez (above) followed a leadoff walk from freshman third baseman Leilani Allen with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Cooper plated Allen with a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 deficit.
Sacramento State and Ortiz, however, kept Cal Poly to just one additional hit the remainder of the night while the Mustangs stranded four baserunners through the final four innings.
The Hornets completed the scoring with another run in the sixth before Evers-Lyles hit a two-run homer down the left field line in the seventh.
