SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper (above) hit her first collegiate home run and sophomore righthander Bree Brennan recorded her first career complete-game victory Saturday evening as the Cal Poly softball program earned a Saturday split at its own Mustang Classic with an 8-2 victory against Manhattan. Earlier Saturday, Cal Poly dropped its opener to Pacific in five innings, 11-1.
During Saturday’s evening victory against first-time opponent Manhattan (3-8), Cooper helped produce all the runs required for victory with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Mustangs added three additional runs in the third with catcher Maya Venegas, left fielder Aly Barrios and second baseman Sienna Erskine each supplying run-scoring hits.
Sophomore right fielder Maddy Bermudez scored on a fourth-inning wild pitch to hand Cal Poly a 7-0 advantage before the Jaspers cut their deficit with a two-run fifth inning.
The Mustangs though completed the scoring in the sixth as Barrios singled with two down to plate junior center fielder A’Niyla Byrd.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Brennan (1-1) conceded just five hits while striking out three Jaspers.
Cal Poly registered a season high 13 hits against Manhattan as Cooper, Byrd, Venegas and Barrios collected two apiece.
