Big Fourth Inning Propels Cal Poly Past San Jose State, 10-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior center fielder A’Niyla Byrd’s two-RBI single keyed a six-run fourth inning and sophomore righthander Bree Brennan tossed four relief innings to earn her second win in as many days as the Cal Poly softball program closed the Mustang Classic Sunday afternoon with a 10-4 victory against San Jose State.
Senior designated player Mylina Garza enjoyed a game high three RBI for Cal Poly, which trailed San Jose State entering the bottom half of the fourth, 3-1. Sophomore left fielder Aly Barrios led off with a single and freshman first baseman Myliegh Cooper followed with a double before Byrd tied the matched with a base hit down the right field line. Freshman third baseman Leilani Allen followed with a bunt single before the Mustangs surged in front after a sacrifice attempt by freshman catcher Ava Lyons was overthrown to first base by San Jose State third baseman Taylor Chillingworth – a miscue that brought home Byrd.
Garza followed with a run-scoring single to plate Allen before sophomore right fielder Maddy Bermudez capped the six-run fourth with a two-RBI base hit.
San Jose State took a run back in the top of the fifth before Garza singled home Allen in the bottom half for an 8-4 cushion.
Cooper and Allen then added run-scoring hits in the sixth to finalize the scoring.
Taking over in the circle for Cal Poly to begin the fourth, Brennan conceded just two hits in the final four innings to earn a second straight victory. On Saturday, Brennan went the distance in Cal Poly’s 8-2 win against Manhattan.
Six different Mustangs enjoyed multi-hit games as Cal Poly finished with 13.
Following an off day, Cal Poly completes a seven-game home stand on Tuesday, Feb. 24 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Santa Clara.
