SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly football team will head to Salt Lake City this week to face its lone FBS opponent of the season in No. 25 Utah. This will be the first ever meeting between the Utes and Mustangs in football.
Saturday’s kickoff against the No. 25 Utes is set for 3 p.m. PT (4 p.m. MT) on ESPN+. Links to the broadcast as well as live stats can both be found on the football schedule page. You can also follow Cal Poly Football on Instagram (@calpolyfootbal) and on X (@calpolyfootball) for live updates throughout the game and for behind the scenes content.
The Mustangs (1-0) got the 2025 season off to a strong start last Saturday with a 41-17 road win over San Diego. Cal Poly's offense totaled 469 yards, 335 passing and 134 rushing. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Ty Dieffenbach made a huge statement in his Mustang debut. The transfer from Pitt was 18-27 passing for 263 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 69 yards and a score for 332 all-purpose yards. Redshirt senior wide receiver Michael Briscoe led the way with seven catches for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Cal Poly's defense held USD to 16 total yards in the first quarter and didn't allow a first down. The defense played strong all game, led by linebacker Mikey D'Amato's team-high 16 tackles and linebacker Kenny Olson's 10 tackles and two sacks.
For his performance, Dieffenbach was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week as well as the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Athlete of the Week.
No. 25 Utah is coming off a dominant performance of its own last weekend, a 43-10 road victory over UCLA. That win moved them into the AP Top 25 rankings. Although Cal Poly and Utah have never met before, there is an interesting football connection between the two programs. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham’s father Fred played football for the Mustangs from 1960-62.
Cal Poly's last victory against an FBS program came on Sept. 15, 2012 with the Mustangs edging Wyoming, 24-22. Since that decision, however, Cal Poly has dropped nine straight against FBS opponents Stanford (2024), San Jose State (2017, 2023), Fresno State (2013, 2021-22), Oregon State (2019), Nevada (2016), Arizona State (2015) and New Mexico State (2014).
Cal Poly will get to play at home for the first time in 2025 when hosting Division II Western Oregon at Mustang Memorial Stadium Saturday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.
