
Mustangs Fall on the Road to No. 25 Utah

The Mustangs (1-1), who played three quarterbacks in the game, passed for 158 yards and rushed for 65. Starting quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, who came out after the first quarter, was 6-9 for 82 yards. Quarterback Anthony Grigsby Jr., who came in after Dieffenbach, was 7-16 for 72 yards and led the way in rushing yards with 25. Defensively, linebacker Kenny Olson had double digit tackles for the second straight game, recording a team-leading 11.
The No. 25 Utes (2-0) had 518 total yards, 245 passing and 273 rushing. Utah starting quarterback Devon Dampier was 17-23 for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
On Utah's opening drive of the game, the Utes went 75 yards in six plays, capped by a 52-yard touchdown pass to Utah running back Wayshawn Parker on a wheel route to take a 7-0 lead. Utah took a 14-0 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter after a pick-six by Utes cornerback Jackson Bennee.
The Mustangs put together an excellent drive midway through the first quarter, going 63 yards in seven plays. Cal Poly then got on the board via a 30-yard field goal by Noah Serna to make it 14-3.
Utah began the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown pass from Dampier to wide receiver Ryan Davis which put the Utes ahead 21-3.
With seven minutes left in the second quarter and Anthony Grigsby Jr. in at quarterback, Cal Poly scored again, this time a career-long 47-yard field goal by Gianluca Dimauro. That capped a 10-play, 39-yard drive to make it 21-6.
With just under two minutes left in the first half, Grigsby's pass was intercepted by Utah linebacker Jonathan Hall at their own five. The Utes then ran in a one-yard touchdown to make it 28-6. Following a punt return by the Utes down to the Cal Poly 30-yard line, Utah closed the half with another one-yard touchdown run to make it 35-6 at the half.
The Utes opened the second half with a 10 play, 70-yard touchdown drive. On second down with the ball at the Cal Poly 11 yard line, Dampier found tight end Dallen Bentley in the end zone for the score.
In the second half, the Mustangs were highlighted by a career-long 51-yard field by kicker Noah Serna. That is tied for the fourth longest field goal made in Cal Poly history.
Cal Poly will now get ready for its home opener next Saturday, September 13 against Division II Western Oregon. Kickoff from Spanos Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
