SAN LUIS OBISPO – Seeking back-to-back victories to begin a season for the first time in 14 years, the Cal Poly football program – following Friday’s 38-34, come-from-behind, season-opening victory against Idaho – welcomes Division II Central Washington on Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 5:05 p.m. on ESPN+ for Cal Poly (1-0), which last opened a season 2-0 in 2012 – a year that ended with the program’s first Big Sky Conference title. With the Mustangs – who received their first votes in a national poll for the first time in 10 years on Monday – playing four of their first six games at home this fall, here’s the rundown for Cal Poly’s second week of action.

GRIGSBY TAKES BIG SKY HONORS

Accounting for all five of Cal Poly’s touchdowns – four passing, one rushing – in the 38-34, season-opening win against Idaho (Aug. 28), quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr., was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. After throwing for 774 total yards and completing 44 passes in six appearances last fall, Grigsby hit Idaho for 316 yards while finishing 26-for-35. The last of those completions was a 34-yard touchdown effort to wide receiver Tayvion McCoy on fourth-and-eight with nine seconds remaining to hand Cal Poly the win.

THE D IN D’AMATO

After leading the Big Sky in total tackles last fall, senior linebacker Mikey D’Amato already ranks third this season after making a game high 14 tackles in Cal Poly’s season opener versus Idaho (Aug. 28). Named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for the most outstanding defensive player in NCAA Division I FCS, D’Amato has 196 career tackles in 23 appearances and requires just 12 more to move into the top 20 in the Cal Poly career record book.

BIG PLAY TAY

Junior wide receiver Tayvion McCoy’s Cal Poly debut against Idaho included 10 catches for 170 yards and the game-winning reception with nine seconds to play. During the opening week of Big Sky play, McCoy caught more balls than any other conference receiver and ranks third in receiving yards.

MUSTANGS BACK ON THE BALLOT

Cal Poly received votes in a national poll for the first in 10 years Monday with the Mustangs collecting 27 points in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll (83 behind No. 25 West Florida) and 11 points in the AFCA Top 25 poll (46 back of No. 25 Southern Illinois). The Mustangs last collected national poll votes in 2016 with Cal Poly climbing as high as No. 14 en route to an NCAA FCS Playoff berth.
