SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly football team couldn't have asked for a better way to start the home portion of its season. The Mustangs were dominant from start to finish as they took down Western Oregon in the home opener, 56-7 Saturday night in front of a sold out Spanos Stadium.
Senior wide receiver Michael Briscoe was the star of the game, recording six catches for 148 yards and four touchdowns. The four receiving touchdowns, all of which came in the first half, is tied for the second most touchdown receptions in a game in program history. As a whole, Cal Poly's offense produced 536 yards, it's first time with 500+ yards in a game since the 2023 season.
Because of the blowout, Cal Poly was able to use four quarterbacks during the game. Starter Ty Dieffenbach, who played in the first half and brief parts of the second half, was 8-11 for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Anthony Grigsby Jr. came in and went 7-11 for 138 yards, a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown. On the ground, running backs Trey Wilson and Kendric Sanders each ran in touchdowns.
Defensively, the Mustangs (2-1) held the Wolves (1-1) to just 68 yards rushing. They also forced Western Oregon into two interceptions. Cornerback Tayden Phillips recorded Cal Poly's first interception of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, cornerback Kresean Kizzy pulled off a 74-yard pick-six.
After forcing Western Oregon into a punt on its opening drive, Cal Poly's first offensive drive at home couldn't have been scripted any better. Dieffenbach connected with Briscoe on its first play from scrimmage for a 70-yard touchdown pass.
The Mustang defense forced another punt on the Wolves' second drive which returner Carson Kuhl took to the Western Oregon 45. Four plays later, Dieffenbach found Briscoe for a second touchdown pass, this time for 25 yards in the corner of the endzone.
Early in the second quarter, Cal Poly extended its lead to 21-0 after a 10-play, 80-yard drive. A 28-yard run by Tyrei Washington set up a two-yard touchdown pass from Dieffenbach to Briscoe for a third time.
With just under five minutes left in the half, Anthony Grigsby Jr. came in at quarterback, making big plays. He first connected with Briscoe for 41-yards down to the four. Grigsby then ran it in from four yards out on the next play to push the lead to 28-0.
Cal Poly ended the first half with an impressive two-minute drill. With Grigsby in at quarterback, the Mustangs went 80 yards in eight plays, finishing with Briscoe's fourth receiving touchdown of the game, a four yarder to make it 35-0 at the half.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 42-0 in the third quarter via redshirt freshman running back Trey Wilson's first career rushing touchdown. A five play, 70-yard drive was capped by Wilson's two-yard run up the middle. Kizzy's pick-six late in the game put an end to things, making it 56-7.
The Mustangs will now head back on the road this upcoming week to Nacogdoches, Texas to face Stephen F. Austin Saturday, Sept. 20 for the final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT.
