The Mustangs are off to a 2-1 start and are coming off a dominant 56-7 win at home last Saturday over Division II Western Oregon. In that game, senior wide receiver Michael Briscoe went off for four first half touchdowns, the second most receiving touchdowns in a game in program history. Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns as Cal Poly split the quarterback reps up as the game got out of hand.
On defense, the Mustangs recorded two interceptions, including a pick-six, as well as two sacks. They also limited Western Oregon to just 68 yards rushing.
Briscoe leads the Big Sky with six receiving touchdowns so far this season. He is second in total yards (288) and yards per game (96). Dieffenbach is tied for the Big Sky lead in passing touchdowns with five. He is second in completion percentage (68.1) and fifth in yards per game (179).
As a team, Cal Poly ranks first in all of FCS in redzone offense and is the sixth-highest passing offense. Defensively, the Mustangs rank 14th in the FCS in sacks with eight.
The Lumberjacks are 1-2 on the season and are receiving votes in the latest FCS Top 25 Poll. They fell to FBS Houston as well as No. 16 Abilene Christian in weeks one and two before dominating Division II Sul Ross State this past week, 63-0.
Following Saturday’s game against Stephen F. Austin, the Mustangs begin Big Sky play Saturday, Sept. 27 on the road at Sacramento State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
