This Week in Mustang Athletics
- Just a week removed from a thrilling season-opening victory over Idaho, Cal Poly football returns to Spanos Stadium at 5 p.m. Saturday to host Division II Central Washington looking to begin a season with back-to-back victories for the first time in 14 years.
- After starting its season with a strong showing at the Texas A&M Invitational this past weekend, Cal Poly volleyball hits the road again this week to face San Diego State on Friday and UC Davis on Saturday as part of a tournament hosted by the Aggies.
- Cal Poly cross country officially gets its 2026 season underway when the team travels to Lompoc on Thursday to take part in the Gaucho Twilight hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
- Unbeaten through its opening four matches for the first time since 2015, Cal Poly men’s soccer visits No. 6 Indiana on Friday and LMU next Monday
- Cal Poly women’s soccer looks to get back on track when they travel to Cal on Thursday to continue a four-match road swing.

- Following Friday’s 38-34 come-from-behind, season-opening victory against Idaho, Cal Poly football welcomes Division II Central Washington to Spanos Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. on ESPN+.
- The Mustangs last opened a season 2-0 in 2012 – a year that ended with the program’s first Big Sky Conference title.
- Accounting for all five of Cal Poly’s touchdowns – four passing, one rushing – in the 38-34 season-opening win against Idaho (Aug. 28), quarterback Anthony Grigsby, Jr., was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. He threw for 316 yards against Idaho and finished 26-for-35, the last of those completions being a 34-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Tayvion McCoy on fourth-and-eight with nine seconds remaining to hand Cal Poly the win.
- Cal Poly received votes in a national poll for the first in 10 years Monday with the Mustangs collecting 27 points in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll (83 behind No. 25 West Florida) and 11 points in the AFCA Top 25 poll (46 back of No. 25 Southern Illinois). The Mustangs last collected national poll votes in 2016 with Cal Poly climbing as high as No. 14 en route to an NCAA FCS Playoff berth.
- The Mustangs and Wildcats have met just one prior with Cal Poly claiming a 49-14 home victory on Sept. 28, 1996.
- Following Saturday’s home game, Cal Poly hits the road for the first time this season to face FBS opponent San Jose State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m.

- After sweeping GCU and Arkansas State at the Texas A&M Invitational, the Mustangs hit the road again this weekend, though they’ll stay closer to home, traveling to UC Davis for a tournament against the host Aggies (Sept. 5, noon) and San Diego State (Sept. 4, 1 p.m.).
- This weekend marks the first meeting between UC Davis and Cal Poly as non-conference opponents following the Aggies’' move to the Mountain West alongside Hawai'i.
- UC Davis captured the 2025 Big West regular-season title before the Mustangs upset the top-seed Aggies in the conference championship match.

- In the season-opening sweep last Friday, transfer Alexis Haury became the first Mustang with more than 45 set assists in a three-set match since 2011. Haury wrapped the weekend with 12.22 assists per set and earned the season’s first Big West Setter of the Week nod.
- The Cal Poly cross country program officially opens a new season and a new era on Thursday at the Gaucho Twilight hosted by UC Santa Barbara at Mission Club Golf Course in Lompoc.
- The women’s 4K gets underway at 6 p.m. with the men’s 6K to follow at 6:25 p.m. You can follow the live results HERE.
- The meet will be the Mustangs’ first under the direction of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jake Stewart and Head Cross Country Coach Delaney Rasmussen.
- The Mustangs head back on the road this week, visiting 6th-ranked Indiana on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. PT (B1G+) and LMU on Monday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. (ESPN+).
- Cal Poly’s 1-1 Sunday home draw with San Diego State – in which junior Devin Bening produced an 86th-minute equalizer to become the program’s seventh different goal scorer this year – kept the Mustangs unbeaten through their opening four matches for the first time since 2015.

- After falling 2-0 to a tough Arizona State team in Tempe on Sunday, the Mustangs get back after it on Thursday when they travel to Berkeley to face Cal at 4 p.m.

- The Mustangs (2-2-1) are 2-7-2 all-time against the Golden Bears (1-2-2). The two sides played to a scoreless draw last year in San Luis Obispo.
- The Mustangs’ last victory over Cal came on Sept. 25, 2009, when Cal Poly earned a 1-0 overtime win over the No. 7 Golden Bears in Berkeley. Three-time Olympian and former U.S. women’s national team captain Alex Morgan was on that Cal team at the time.
