3/8/2025 6:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore forward Mary Carter scored a career-high 27 points but Cal Poly women's basketball fell to Long Beach State Saturday 72-64 in the final home game and regular season game of the season.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs (13-17, 8-12 Big West) will now hit the reset button and get ready to compete in next week's Big West Championships in Henderson, Nev.
Carter shot over 50 percent from the field and knocked down five threes for the second straight game. She has scored over 15 points in each of the last three games, including two over 20 points.
Despite Carter's great effort, the Mustangs struggled to shoot as a team. In the second half, Cal Poly shot just 27 percent. Long Beach State meanwhile shot 48 percent and had three players score at least 17 points.
Cal Poly got off to a good start to begin the game. A 10-0 run in the first quarter gave the Mustangs a 14-6 lead seven minutes into it. Long Beach State responded with a strong start to the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run the first three minutes to tie it at 22.
The Beach outscored the Mustangs 22-10 in the second and led at halftime 35-32. Cal Poly was held to 10 points as well in the third as Long Beach led 50-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, an 11-0 run by Long Beach put them up 20 with four minutes left. Cal Poly continued to fight and responded with a 15-2 run over the next three minutes to get back within seven. However, the Mustangs were unable to draw any closer from there.
Cal Poly will be the No. 8 seed in the Big West Championships and will face the No. 5 seed in the first round Wednesday at noon on ESPN+.
