Mustangs Take Down UCSB to Advance in Big West Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. – Led by double doubles from both sophomore forward Mary Carter and redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie and strong defense by the Mustangs, Cal Poly women's basketball came up with a 56-54 First Round Big West Championship win over UCSB Wednesday afternoon at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nev.
Lichtie finished with a team high 17 points and 13 rebounds. Carter had 12 points and team rebounds. Freshman Gabby Robinson and senior Sidney Richards each added eight points for the Mustangs, who now move on to the quarterfinals Thursday against UC San Diego.
Cal Poly's defense held the sharpshooting Gauchos to 18 percent from three and 33 percent shooting overall as the Mustangs never trailed in the game.
Cal Poly got off to a hot start, getting out to an 11-2 lead four minutes into game. The Mustangs went up by as much as 13 thanks to making four first quarter threes, a lead they took into the second quarter after holding UCSB to six first quarter points.
In the second quarter, a 13-4 run by the Gauchos made it 23-19 with three minutes left. Cal Poly scored five straight points to close the half and lead 28-19 at halftime.
Cal Poly bounced back in the third, pushing its lead back up to 13 multiple times, including 40-27. The Mustangs led it 42-30 heading into the fourth.
UCSB knocked down two threes to open the fourth quarter to make it 42-36. With five minutes left, UCSB scored to make it a three-point game, 45-42. With the Mustangs up three with just under three minutes left, Annika Shah hit a three to put Cal Poly ahead 51-45.
UCSB then got it down to three, 53-50 with 90 seconds left. Cal Poly then got consecutive stops and made its free throws to go up 55-50 with 37 seconds left. With 1.4 seconds left and the Mustangs up 55-52, the refs called a double foul which gave both teams free throws. Richards split hers and Santa Barbara made both to draw within two. UCSB then turned it over on its final possession to end the game.
Cal Poly will face UC San Diego Thursday at 12 p.m. inside Lee's Family Forum. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and on radio on ESPN Radio 1280AM and GoPoly.com.
