Mustangs Swept in Saturday Doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA – Junior designated player Kiara Blanchard's third-inning RBI single provided the Cal Poly softball program an initial lead during Saturday's series and doubleheader opener at Big West leader UC Santa Barbara, but the Gauchos scored three times without reply in the 3-1 decision. Cal Poly also fell in Saturday's second game, 6-3, despite a two-run homer and career best three-hit effort from junior third baseman Mylina Garza (above).
During Saturday's opening 3-1 setback, Cal Poly was kept without a baserunner until senior first baseman Malia Mah and sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd strung together successive one-out singles during the top of the third. Two batters later and with two down, freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Blanchard singled home Mah.
Cal Poly's 1-0 lead, however, was erased at the first opportunity as the Gauchos executed a double-steal attempt during the bottom of the third with right fielder Giselle Mejia thrown out at second and second baseman Jazzy Santos scoring.
UC Santa Barbara produced the go-ahead run in the fifth through a one-out sacrifice fly from third baseman Bella Fuentes. Gauchos first baseman Emily Carr then belted a solo homer in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Cal Poly mounted one final challenge in the top of the seventh with freshman pinch hitter Maya Venegas singling to lead off before right fielder Maddy Bermudez and Erskine enjoyed back-to-back two-out base hits. UC Santa Barbara starting righthander Malaya Johnson (11-5), however, induced a game-ending pop up from Blanchard.
Senior righthander Kate Judy sustained the loss for Cal Poly after conceding six hits and striking out two.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly stranded a baserunner to end the top of the first before UC Santa Barbara surged ahead in the bottom half through a Mejia RBI double and Fuentes two-run double.
The Gauchos then made it 5-0 in the second with a Santos RBI single and steal of home by left fielder Alexa Sams.
After stranding eight baserunners in Saturday's opener, Cal Poly left another one on in the second inning of game No. 2 before breaking onto the scoreboard during the fourth with Garza's two-run homer.
UC Santa Barbara added its final run in the fourth before Cal Poly closed the scoring during the sixth as Venegas reached on a fielder's choice to score Blanchard.
