SANTA BARBARA – A five-run fifth inning from UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon finalized an 8-0, five-inning decision as the Cal Poly softball program fell during its series finale to the Gauchos.
Cal Poly senior starting righthander Kate Judy kept Big West leader UC Santa Barbara hitless to close the first before the Gauchos broke through in the second through catcher Daryn Siegel's leadoff homer. The hosts exited the second inning leading 3-0 following successive two-out, run-scoring doubles from left fielder Alexa Sams and second baseman Jazzy Santos.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded two baserunners in the second after senior catcher Julia Barnett and sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez (above) strung together successive leadoff singles. The Mustangs, however, were retired in order during the top halves of the first, third, fourth and fifth.
UC Santa Barbara then placed the game in run-rule territory with its five-run fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer by third baseman Bella Fuentes.
Cal Poly resumes action when hosting Cal State Bakersfield for a three-game, April 5-6 series. Action on ESPN+ at Bob Janssen Field gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 5.
