Big Innings Boost Cal Poly to Saturday Sweep of Cal State Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez's two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning broke up a scoreless matchup for the Cal Poly softball program as the Mustangs prevailed in Saturday afternoon's series and doubleheader against Cal State Bakersfield, 4-0. The Mustangs then utilized a five-run fifth inning in game No. 2 to complete Saturday's sweep with a 5-4 victory.
During Saturday's opening 4-0 victory, Cal Poly was kept hitless through the opening three and one-third innings by Cal State Bakersfield starting righthander Bailee Bustos. The Mustangs though loaded the bases with two down in the fourth before Bermudez broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-run single up the middle.
Freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine followed with a single to re-load the bases before junior left fielder Kiara Blanchard drew a walk to force home sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd for a 3-0 advantage. Senior catcher Julia Barnett continued with a run-scoring infield hit as Cal Poly exited the fourth inning with the 4-0 lead.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior starting righthander Kate Judy conceded 11 hits and stranded 11 baserunners – including every inning except the second. Striking out three, Judy stranded the Cal State Bakersfield bases loaded to complete the top half of the sixth and, preserving Cal Poly's lead, the seventh to close out the Roadrunners.
Bermudez led Cal Poly with two hits in the opener.

Roadrunners center fielder Kaia Johnson next lined into a double play, but left fielder Faith Steffany followed with a run-scoring hit for a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs, however, wrested control of the matchup two innings later. Placing two on with one down, Cal Poly's initial run came after an Erskine single into center was mishandled by Johnson with the error plating Byrd. Blanchard next delivered the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI single. Barnett followed with an outfield single before the throw from Steffany in left sailed past catcher Maya Molina-Villareal and allowed Blanchard to score. Junior third baseman Mylina Garza closed the five-run effort with a sacrifice fly.
Cal State Bakersfield added three runs in the top half of the sixth with a two-out, two-run double from Molina-Villareal cutting Cal Poly's lead to 5-4.
Taking over for Maier in the circle with two down in the sixth, sophomore Ally Robbins returned in the seventh to strike out the Cal State Bakersfield side and earn her first career save.
