Mustangs Split Wednesday Doubleheader at Seattle
3/26/2025 7:48:00 PM | Softball
SEATTLE – Seven Seattle errors contributed to all of the Cal Poly softball program's runs during the opening matchup of a Wednesday doubleheader at Logan Field, but the Redhawks produced the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh as the Mustangs were edged, 6-5. The Mustangs, however, rebounded in game No. 2, scoring twice in the sixth and holding on for a 2-1 victory.
During Wednesday's opening 6-5 setback – which included a 30-minute lightening delay between the third and fourth innings – Cal Poly trailed 5-1 entering the top of the sixth before placing two on with one down. Freshman pinch hitter Maya Venegas then reached on an error by Seattle shortstop Mikee Morris – a miscue that brought home junior third baseman Mylina Garza. Two batters later, right fielder Maddy Bermudez walked to load the bases before shortstop Sienna Erskine produced a run-scoring hit. Junior left fielder Kiara Blanchard followed with a fielder's choice and a subsequent throwing error by Seattle third baseman Taylor Fitch plated Venegas for a 5-4 deficit.
Cal Poly then tied the matchup in the seventh as sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez singled to score freshman Aly Barrios – who herself reached on a leadoff error.
Seattle, however, responded with the winning run in the bottom half as Fitch drew a leadoff walk before being doubled home by first baseman Jasmine When.
Cal Poly, which stranded 10 baserunners, took an initial 1-0 lead in the top of the first through two Seattle errors before the Redhawks scored twice in the bottom half. Seattle then ran its lead to 5-1 in the third through catcher Karen Spadafora's three-run homer.
During Wednesday's second game and 2-1 victory, the matchup remained scoreless through five innings. Erskine, however, doubled to lead off the sixth and stole third before Blanchard doubled down the right field line to hand Cal Poly the 1-0 lead. Senior catcher Julia Barnett added a single and, two batters later, freshman left fielder Aly Barrios delivered a sacrifice fly to score Blanchard for the eventual winning run.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Seattle native and senior starting righthander Kate Judy retired the first eight Redhawks hitters faced and limited the hosts to four hits through the initial five innings.
Seattle halved Cal Poly's lead during the bottom of the sixth as designated player Nicola Simpson scored first baseman Jasmine Wehn with a two-out single. Into the seventh, Seattle right fielder Camryn Johnson doubled to lead off before moving to third through a sacrifice bunt. Judy, however, forced a flyout from center fielder Sophia Kissling and groundout by Morris to earn the victory.
Blanchard and Barnett led Cal Poly with two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Cal Poly concludes its six-game road with a three-game, March 29-30 series at UC Santa Barbara. Action opens with a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday, March 29 on ESPN+.
