SEATTLE – Sophomore A'Niyla Byrd's first collegiate homer in the third inning tied the Cal Poly softball program's Tuesday matchup versus Washington, but the Huskies scored three times in the fifth to surge ahead as the Mustangs fell, 5-1.
Senior starting righthander and Seattle native Kate Judy struck out three for Cal Poly (4-23), which fell behind Washington (24-9) during the bottom of the first inning after first baseman Alexis DeBoer's run-scoring single plated catcher Jadyn Glab.
Held hitless and to just one baserunner into the third, Cal Poly equalized after Byrd (above) swatted her solo homer down the left field line.
Judy stranded five Husky baserunners through the opening four innings before Washington right fielder Alycia Flores hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Glab then added a run-scoring single in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Following Byrd's homer, Cal Poly was limited to singles by freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine in the sixth and sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez during the seventh.
Cal Poly concludes play in the Emerald City with a Wednesday, March 26 doubleheader at Seattle. Action on ESPN+ gets underway at 1 p.m.
