Mustangs Fall Twice Saturday at Louisville Slugger Invitational

LONG BEACH – Junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard's run-scoring single coupled with another RBI from senior catcher Julia Barnett handed the Cal Poly softball program a third-inning lead against Omaha Saturday morning at Long Beach State's Louisville Slugger Invitational, but the Mavericks scored five times without reply for the 5-2 victory. Cal Poly also dropped Saturday's second matchup to Utah Tech, 6-0.
During Saturday's opening 5-2 setback to Omaha, Cal Poly was kept without a baserunner until the bottom half of the third when freshman designated player Natalie Camarena drew a leadoff walk before sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez enjoyed a one-out single. Blanchard followed with her run-scoring single to bring in freshman pinch runner Aly Barrios and, two batters later, a groundout from Barnett plated Martinez for the 2-0 advantage.
In the circle for the Mustangs, starting senior righthander Paige Maier (1-4) limited Omaha to two hits through the initial three innings before the Mavericks surged ahead with three runs in the top half of the fourth as left fielder Ava Rongisch and designated player Katherine Johnson supplied RBI hits before a Cal Poly throwing error contributed to the go-ahead run.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to equalize came in the fifth after Blanchard doubled with one down. Omaha reliever Alexis Wiggins (3-2), however, retired the next two Mustangs to end the threat.
Omaha then added its final two runs in the sixth for the 5-2 decision.
Blanchard paced Cal Poly with two hits versus Omaha.
During Saturday's 6-0 loss to Utah Tech, the Trailblazers loaded the bases with one down during the bottom of the second before center fielder Maka Sonognin drew a walk to force home the eventual winning run. A Mustang fielding error and a second bases-loaded walk contributed to the next two runs before shortstop LB Kahahawai-Kekona completed a four-run inning with a run-scoring single.
Another Cal Poly error in the fourth following a single from Trailblazers catcher Kinley Pappas then brought in Utah Tech's final two runs.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded six baserunners, twice leaving a Mustang on third to close both the top halves of the third and fifth innings. Barnett led Cal Poly with two hits against Utah Tech.
