Mustangs Rally for 4-3 Sunday Victory against Loyola Marymount

LONG BEACH – Junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard's two-out, two-run double completed a three-run fifth inning for the Cal Poly softball program as the Mustangs closed action at Long Beach State's Louisville Slugger Invitational Sunday afternoon with a 4-3, come-from-behind victory against Loyola Marymount.
Trailing Loyola Marymount, 3-1, entering the bottom half of the fifth inning, Cal Poly (4-13) received a one-out single from freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine before freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez reached on a fielding error. With two Mustangs in scoring position, senior catcher Julia Barnett unleashed a single to center that plated Erskine (who finished with a career best three hits).
Three batters later and with two down, Blanchard unloaded her two-run double to plate Bermudez and sophomore pinch runner JJ Babore for the 4-3 advantage.
Having taken over in the circle for Cal Poly with one down in the second, freshman reliever Bree Brennan (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory by stranding two Lions baserunners in the sixth before inducing a game-ending double play in the seventh with Loyola Marymount designated player Sydney Poole on third.
Cal Poly opened Sunday's scoring during the first with junior third baseman Mylina Garza supplying a bases-loaded single to bring home Erskine (above).
The Lions, however, countered at the first opportunity as shortstop Analiah Lummus uncorked a one-out, bases-clearing double to hand Loyola Marymount the 3-1 lead.
Cal Poly next returns home to open its 28th year of Big West action when hosting CSUN for a three-game, March 8-9 series. Action at Bob Janssen Field gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 8.
