Mustangs Drop Pair to CSUN to Open Big West Play

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Juniors Kiara Blanchard and Mylina Garza enjoyed run-scoring hits during the Cal Poly softball program's Saturday afternoon Big West opener against CSUN while senior catcher Julia Barnett produced a two-run single in game No. 2 of the doubleheader, but the Mustangs dropped both matchups to the Matadors, 7-2 and 6-2.
During Saturday's initial 7-2 setback, CSUN opened the scoring with two runs in the top half of the first before Cal Poly halved its early deficit during the bottom as Garza doubled home Blanchard with one down.
The Mustangs (4-15, 0-2) then tied the matchup an inning later with Blanchard singling to right center to bring around sophomore right fielder A'Niyla Byrd.
CSUN (9-12, 2-0), however, struck for the eventual winning run during the third as first baseman Alexis Chavez doubled in shortstop Jerzie Liana with two down for a 3-2 advantage. The Matadors then went up 6-2 in the fourth as designated player Tiara Westbrook unloaded the bags with a double down the left field line for the 6-2 lead.
The Matadors then finalized the scoring with a single run in the seventh.
Blanchard and freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine co-led Cal Poly with two hits apiece in the opener. Senior righthander Kate Judy sustained the loss in three and two-thirds innings of relief for Cal Poly, which stranded eight runners.
During Saturday's second 6-2 defeat, starting freshman righthander Natalie Camarena retired CSUN's first six hitters before Chavez led off the third with a single. A Mustang fielding error followed before right fielder Raegan Jackson singled home pinch runner Jizzell Ruiz. Third baseman Jadyn Nielsen followed later in the inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Cal Poly, however, erased CSUN's 2-0 lead at the first chance as freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez and Blanchard strung together successive two-out singles in the bottom half of the third. Barnett then delivered her two-run single down the right field line to tie the matchup.
Cal Poly stranded eight baserunners in game No. 2, including the bases loaded to close the fifth.
CSUN capitalized next with a four-run sixth inning as pinch hitter Sydney Freijanes handed the Matadors a 3-2 lead with an infield single. A two-run double by Jackson followed before another Cal Poly fielding error contributed to CSUN's sixth and final run.
Bermudez and Blanchard paced Cal Poly with two hits in the nightcap.
