Cal Poly Falls to CSUN in Sunday Series Finale
3/9/2025 3:39:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A six-run, second inning from CSUN placed the Cal Poly softball program in an early deficit Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs closed a three-game, Big West-opening series against the Matadors with a 12-0, five-inning setback at Bob Janssen Field.
CSUN struck Sunday's opening blow during the top of the first as shortstop Jerzie Liana followed left fielder Mikayla Carman's leadoff double with a two-out, run-scoring two-bagger of her own.
The Matadors then produced their six-run second inning with five CSUN batters producing run-scoring hits, including third baseman Jadyn Nielsen's two-run double to left center.
Facing the 7-0 deficit, Cal Poly was kept to solitary singles in the third and fourth innings before being retired in order during the fifth.
Nielsen, meanwhile, returned with one down in third to place the matchup in run-rule territory with a single down the right field line to plate right fielder Raegan Jackson. Pinch hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval followed with a run-scoring groundout to run CSUN's lead to 9-0 before the Matadors added three final runs in the fifth.
Freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez (above) collected two of Cal Poly's five hits.
Cal Poly resumes Big West action when visiting UC Davis for a three-game, March 15-16 series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 15.
